  • However: name a french ref from any non-french tournament, there aren't many.

    Mayeut @ Krakow, Eurobench...

    #winning

  • And two bigotes, iirc?

Not as many as the uk, but about the same as most other countries, right?

  • Jo pompon (right spelling?) at the Euros.

  • Was impressed by Jo PomPoms reffing. Saw him ref quite a few games on Saturday.

  • To be fair its also harder to ref if/when your team goes far in a tournament.

(As in all the French teams are too good at polo.)

  • "What is London doing?"

Do you mean are people like John, Jono and myself working on this in private? No. Has a serious discussion been started by other players? No. Do we have a refs list for the London Open and are we going to make it as well organised as we can? Yes. London is everyone, if a serious reffing discussion has happened you would have seen it and if you cant see it and want to grumble about it not happening then make it happen! The test is good, we could make our own test but that needs someone's time and effort to make it happen. We could have a paper one before tournaments wjuch the head ref gives out and explains any mistakes to refs before the day starts, ensuring everyone is on the same page. You beed a very confident head ref or refs. Ideally a reffing team ahould be four people, the main ref, a timekeeper and two goal refs, the latter three being able to advise refs with various hand signals or radios even. It is the same people over and over who end up doing a lot of reffing and then people jump down the throats of less experienced refs when they dont ref hard enough! I don't want to pay refs to travel to tournaments but the Euro Bench Minor situation was a bit intense, reffing for four hours straight is not ideal.

  • Errr not sure there was a conclusion there, tl; dr. But yeah reffing is important and we should set up a committee or similar to look after it!

  • 82%! Sign me up!

  • Jess I don't see why we need to make it our own? We use the same rules, therefore the test is relevant, no?

Those who want to spend time on this should help with what the North Americans are doing.

  • This

  • It doesn't have to be one or the other. The NAH tool will (I suspect) be massively useful, but that doesn't mean that the UK polo community can't do other things to supplement it.

Here's an idea that anyone can pick up and run with right now. Practice reffing at throw-ins. This could be done on a sole basis, or by buddying up with a more experienced ref. Even if you're not making all the calls that the rules might require, you'll get used to concentrating on the game, calling goals/time etc., managing restarts. All this will build familiarity with the role of a ref, and hence confidence.

  • 88% I think that means two wrong.

  • 94%

    Don't even read that shit.

  • Are people reading the rules before taking the test, or just gunning it? If it's the later then I'm blown away.

(If the former then the system still works as this is primarily about getting people to absorb the rules).

  • I just gunned it. Suspect the ones I got wrong were about timekeepers etc.
Plus, what's this shit about starting the game with a whistle?

  • revising = cheating.
if the rules don't follow common sense they're wrong.

Haha /rant. Also, this wasn't a personal attack, so calm right down :) Reffing certification is a great next step towards empowering people and creating more knowledgable, skilful and ultimately more confident refs. We should applaud and consider implementing over here, shirley?

  • 82%, suck it!

  • I just gunned it. Suspect the ones I got wrong were about timekeepers etc.

    This...

Well 82% is three wrong, for me that was the two questions relating to ref and timekeeping duties and the egg and spoon question.

Either way it's working because I looked at the rules for ages trying to work out what I'd done wrong, and would defo get 94% if I took the same test again...

  • 100%

    Like a boss.

  • 6%, I'll do the final, yeah?

Oh no bud, just trying to clarify what you were asking! I totally agree with you! Just hoping we can get a group of people running with it...

Yes, we should support and follow on from the NAH progression but there are definitely subtle differences and maybe things we would like to implement ourselves, being the forward thinkers we are! :)

  • Erin cheated...

I am fearful that there are too many rules

  • 88%, not too bad.
