• Beagle stop high sticking

• An oldie but a goodie.

• Melburn need moar memes.

• Here's one i wonder about often.

The hooking rule....

The other day i hit todd in the face (gently, he's ok). My swing is getting a bit silly but it wasnt a swing that got him, he was hooking (cleverly) my mallet and i moved it back to get it outta the way then i think somehow they got a little caught up and i hit him.

This has happened to me recently too, where i was being hooked (not so cleverly as todd was hooking me...) and i moved my mallet out of the way and got hit in the face (pretty gently again)....not to mention the times that i am sure i have done it are countless

It seems there might be a theme..

I'd like us to all just stop hooking, but we all do it to different extremes perhaps.

I think that hooking where it replaces any attempt to play the ball i.e. playing the mallet first, could be ruled out of the game and stop this kind of messy shit from happening and bring it back to ball play.

Hacking is different imo, but repeated hooking seems almost more destructive (to faces at least and to the game).

Maybe this has been discussed before, i don't keep track of this stuff, but i wondered what other people thought.

• Hooking does seem to lead to high-sticking a lot.

• "No hooking above bar height"?

I think refs aren't paying enough attention to mallet-wheel interactions. Haydn dislocated his elbow at NvS because a mallet hooked his front wheel and I have two bruised wrists from something similar at throwins a week ago.

I believe it's the player's responsibility to control their own mallet and the ref's responsibility to call out such situations early (i.e when all it causes is a footdown) to avoid "edgy" play which eventually crosses the line and puts someone out.

• Hooking can be very effective though. You hook your opponent so that they can't play the ball then play the ball away from them. Being hooked is annoying its just true, but i cant see how we can stop it as it is A: effective B: Better than hacking, which people still do all the time and never get called out on.
Personally i would like to see a total ban on hacking whether you are slapping an opponent away because they are reaching for the ball. Back slashing or swinging wildly at a mallet. Some player refuse to allow the player behind them to try and reach in without slashing back at them. I do tell these players, (being a wallflower it is hard, but i try) and it still does not stop. In Rouen, Polo (Paul) slashed my mallet backwards so hard it went under my front wheel and flipped me off. I consider this a mallet under wheel and a slash its a ball turnover at least. It being france and a world champ i'm sure you will fall off your chair to hear no one said a thing. Polo did at least say "are you ok, Brendeen?" Which was nice.

Any kind of slash back, however hard to 'warn' the opponent off should be a penalty i think. Its aggressive, haughty and just plain rude. Dribble out of it, deal with it.

• Hooking needs to be kept... It's pretty much my whole game! :)

• And job.

• and your so deft at it my fine lefty friend.

Didn't this happen at the Euros/Worlds and there was a video clip and resultant lengthy discussion about it (same [French] player, different victim)? I think in that instance the perp's teammate scored a goal so quickly that the ridiculous foul got ignored... It probably changed the course of world history.

• ^^. What the hooking I'm talking about or snotty?

(How drunk did I get on Wednesday?)

• whaaat a cnut

• +1 dick move

It is in the rules, it just needs to be enforced properly.
*3. Tripping

1. A tripping/wheel hook penalty will be assessed when:
2. A player causes an opposing player to dab by hooking their wheel with their mallet.
3. If, in the opinion of the referee, a player makes contact with the ball first and
subsequently trips the opponent in so doing, no penalty will be assessed.*
• A thought, following the Bristol Open. As there weren't suitable spaces for (main) refs at the side of the courts, refs were on court throughout the games.

How do people feel this worked out?
For those of you reffing, did it help or hinder your view of the game?
Players, did the refs get in the way much etc?

• Paging Louis.

• Playing the refs did their best to keep out of the way. Most of the time successfully. If the refs can see the game better then I say keep them on court. Cam and I discussed the possibilities of clipless rollerskates...

• Microscooters and Britney/Madonna-style handsfree mics would be the logical next step.

It made it obvious when the ref was being pressured by spectators to apply a particular unfamiliar sanction and would then need to confer with said spectators to confirm the rules for said unfamiliar sanction.

Love you x.

• I've always liked on court refs, I prefer to do it, where possible.

• Bloody celebrity refs, the sport will be full of Graeme Poll's within 3 years, mark my words.
