  • I quite want to see how it works. If it doesn't then fuck it, as you were.

  • And hence they can be changed as and when it is convenient? It's called rules, which bit of R U L E S you dont understand, it you are not used to it, you are more likely to break it no? Same thing with laws. As it is, peeps are already pushing the limits of the current ruleset, plenty of grey areas, maybe improve the current set first?

  • I think he has a pretty good grasp of what rules are, but I don't think that's the particular piece of sand in your vagina that's bugging you. Everyone is going to be starting with the same advantage/disadvantage anyway and it's as good a place as any to test it out. Try it, you just might like it. If not you could always take 2 bikes to Newington and sit in the D. ;)

  • Rob, say whatever you want, not bothered, I could have said something harsh in response but decided against it.

  • There was a ;), try to never take me too seriously.

  • he knew it was a joke. he has to do something about that sand in his vagina.

  • Had some offline chat tonight about these rules.

The main question was "Why???"... What are we gaining by adding these rules and who's driving the agenda? Are we that bored by Dan blogging "Fuck the goalie!"?

I'm boring myself with the relentless 'fuck the goalies' thing.

The main reason as I see it is that double/triple goalies encourages polo that is frustrating to play and ugly to watch. If we want to maintain enthusiasm of current players we need a ruleset which promotes safe, enjoyable, skilfull polo. If we want to grow polo, we need to make it look attractive to outsiders.

Yes, it's subjective, but I suspect even the most ardent of double-d'ers know it's fucking ugly and encourages even uglier goalie fucking which results in a series of goalmouth cluster fucks and random, opportunistic breaks and one-on-ones with goalies.

  • ive just been catching up on this thread, and this^ seems the most sensible and insightful post for a while.
    Viva Polo!

  • My 2p... IT'S THE OPEN.

Fine. I'm not greatly enamoured with the changes but if I respect the organisers' decision in this non-series, non-championship tournament.

This is the best place to try out tweeks to the ruleset.

As John has said, the Open is a fun tourney for most. Do you think all 70+ teams are going for the win here? Nope. Most of us just come for the fun, the beer, and the awesome people.

  • Incidentally;

I played the best polo of my life at Souths yesterday. I've never played with so many excellent players, I really really enjoyed myself despite feeling out of my depth a lot of the time.

Rules are rarely enforced at throwins obviously, and many infractions were made. I STILL RODE HOME WITH THE BIGGEST SMILE ON MY FACE. Just enjoy the game ffs.

  • Looking forward to trying out dem new rules. Exciting stuff.

  • Two seconds seems a bit short.

  • I think were all missing the real infraction on our civil liberties;

    1. Uniforms must not be too loose fitting...

    Ban fouls not flaps

    Repped.

  • Don't like the ruleset - don't go to the party! The LO is a progressive tournament and it suits its nature to be at the vanguard of improving the game. Inevitably the polotrends that push any existing ruleset will be seen to be pegged back - this isn't inherently negative.

In the case of the multiple goalies - I'd prefer a simpler boxed zone where only the one goalie/defensive player can enter. Any other defensive players entering the zone with the bike get the penalties. Simple to spot, simple to ref.

I expect the two second rule will place even more pressure on the inevitably varied abilities of referees and suspect that the more competitive teams will be able to steal an advantage either on court or through 'vigorously' challenging decisions.

    Going to be exciting!

  • Any other defensive players entering the zone with the bike get the penalties.

Yeah, but then you have the problem if you are chasing an attacker down the court, you'd have to suddenly let them through to goal, which would be strange.

Then you'd have to ban offensive players from that area as well.

Let's try that too. There's still plenty of time!

Ban offensive players? Is this why Danwentdrinking isn't playing? Have rumours of his Geneva behaviour spread?

  • Crease as in ice hokckey have to be for on defensive player only, either offensive or teammates have to be ban from this. This is really strange to say that offensive players have the right to be there and not the defensives. It's gonna be really easy to mess with the goalie if nobody is around to protect him. I like th idea of trying this ule but you should copy one who already exist and work, the ice hockey one.

  • Defensive players can be there, just not stopped.

  • I would like to see a basket ball style shot clock.

In a similar way to the double d it would negate the boring take the ball all the way back round to your own half play.

  • More rules!

  • i wanna see a rewind rule so that when i get the ball, go round two players and shoot only to miss, i can rewind time to have another go until the shot goes in.

    just me though.

  • Done
