  • Just look at the bikes that other people use for tricks and come up wih something invetween.
Sorry to be harsh but outright plagarism is just shitty.

Joe is a good guy and deserves better than having his bike ripped off. There's a lotta love in them brooklyn boys.

  • I'd love to own a brooklyn.
I think it was just a stop gap.

  • I've modified it as a design...

Not massive mods but it's gonna be different.

eyes, it's kinda too late, i've sent the confirming design order...

  • cool.
when we were organising it, i was away form my home computer, work doesn't smile on bike cad

  • WTF....have you that little respect for people that you would just completely rip off their hard work?
I consider Joe from brooklyn machine works to be a good friend of mine who has helped me out a lot in the past with the various bikes i've bought from him.
Up until about a year ago his company was really struggling to make ends meet....he was lucky enough to get enough backing to be able to almost make a fresh start after his partnership with doc finished.
Joe then spent thousands of hours working on several new designs...one of which was the Gangsta.....he's since worked his bollocks off to make it such a well respected frame.
To think that you would even consider just a straight up ripping off of all his hard work really pisses me off.
Now i know you probably don't give two shits for my opinion...but i have too much respect for Joe as both a friend and designer to not voice my opinions on this idea of yours.

I just hope you decide to go a different route and actually put in some work yourself just like Joe had to.
Brooklyn machine works is still a tiny company with a pretty small profit margin....they make everything themselves in house.
Ideas like this are what have finished off several small builders over the years.

Work on your own design....it's much more satisfying.

  • I do care about everyones opinion, Scott. I just used it as a base for my design, there are a few fairly big mods where frame design has changed quite a bit...

I know it's a bit of a gay thing to do, but at the end of the day, they're expensive frames, my mum has been made redundant, can't find another job cos the fucking cunt of a credit crunch/recession, and is trying to live on 58 quid a week, and i don't keep all that much money for myself now, i've not long turnt 17, and i'm basically having to be fully independant, the only thing done for me is the roof over my head and i still have to pay that, so 100 odd quid compared to 500 at least is a nice thing if it means i can have some fun.

  • You'd do better looking for a second hand Charge or similar and swapping the forks for something barspinable. Saves the ripping off someones business and still gets you a solid bike.

  • Well, really, i wouldn't have bought a brooklyn in a very long time, certainly not the track so it doesn't make a difference?

I was gonna get a Plug but no one sells em frame only.

  • in fairness, joe at brooklyn isn't unique in his frame geometry or his concept, people buy brooklyns because of the build quality and the peace of mind, i doubt he would care that much...
he'd probably be flattered that people are trying to emulate his bikes. but lets be honest, they are in no way a replacement for the gangsta track. its a whole different animal with plenty of unique features. a bike is never as simple as its geo.

would be interested to see what he thinks though... brooklyn bikes are a work of art.

  • Yeah, indeed they are, he's designed some absolutley epic bikes... And i am a fan, but there's no way i can afford 500 quid, especially as this is meant to be my hack/pub bike... And i have only used his lengths and angles as a base and modified them for mine/eyebrows/festerban's needs.

  • Katana make a specific trick frame that is designed to allow easy 700c bar spins, and is a lovely bit of kit, hand built and reinforced in all the right places - you can go talk to Simon SBR Fulham to get custom geometry too :

    • 1 to not ripping of the BMW
  • But how much is the Katana?

  • @fatpants....sorry to hear about yours and your familys financial situation...but when i was young i also had no money to be buying expensive bikes either....so i did what most people do....worked my bollocks off and saved...if you cant afford the actual thing but want it badly enough you save till you can get one....it took me two years to scrape together enough money for my first brooklyn...and when i finally got it i was so happy.
Why not build a cheap hack bike for now and start saving what you can until you can buy an actual brooklyn if that's what you really want?

  • is there not quite a long waiting list for gangstas now?

also +1 on scott not scott. I think its a bit low just getting someone to completely rip another companies design like that, especially a small company like brooklyn who has had to fight to stay in business anyway.

  • At the same time, three frames at $120 is great business for (presumably) a small, independent Peruvian frame builder.

  • Joe is working hard on the Gangstas right now...especially after starting making the new 50cm size...but i don't think the wait is that bad on them. Certainly not compared to what the wait used to be for the race links anyway ;)

  • At the same time, three frames at $120 is great business for (presumably) a small, independent Peruvian frame builder.

Yeah...especially when he didn't have to put in hours of research and development time to get a design that works.
Everyone gets all up in arms on here about certain companies getting clothing and other shit made by cheap labour in the orient...and yet couldn't seem to care less about a tiny company that has had to work damn hard to build their enviable reputation being blatantly ripped off....'i want 3 COPIES of these please'...but for a fraction of the price....f*cked up!

  • I have a cheapy emmelle touring frame for a fixed, but it's wayyy too long rear endwise to do tricks on, and tricks are the main thing i want from a fixed. I've got a fairly nice geared bike for miles.

I don't want a brooklyn, because they are expensive.

And yeah, copies, that was initially what i wanted, but i've since told him to do some different things.

  • I'm definitely with you on the issue of copyright infringement, Scott. But whether or not this is such a case, an individual gets to take some gringo dollar. People get up in arms when they hear of brand name products being made in sweatships by folk who get paid next to nothing to work in dreadful conditions for absurd lengths of time. Custom mad trick frames from Peru seems more like a case of fair trade coffee = direct from the grower. Idle speculaion aside, the guy has never built road frames before, so is hardly likely to have researched their geometry - he's working some specified dimensions, likely unaware (as we are, taking Fat Pants' word) whether those dimensions correspond to someone else's hard graft, time and copyright.

  • It's the comment about the first email sent to the guy that pissed me off the most and shows the lack of repect...the fact that he sent the actual link to the brooklyn machine works actual website gemetry pic and said 'i want 3 copies of this'...that's what comes across as totally out of order to me.

  • Yeah but as mentioned, i've since made some changes...

  • Then i look forward to seeing it. Good luck with it.

  • Yeah so do i. I mean, if i could get a charge frame and he has problems making it i would go for the charge, but atm, money isn't nice to me and it's how I *wanted *it.

  • I suggested the gangsta track as it was the easiest way to describe some decent street geometry thats barspinable etc.

If I was ordering a bike I would love the opportunity to design one myself, but if its only made of mild steel I might as well buy a welder and give the building a go myself.

  • raleigh lizard, that'll do the job
