  • i suppose you want a +rep now.

I'm not bothered really. I just enjoy poking fun at horatio (and other people) on the forum.

I don't care if it stays or goes.

  • It seems to be more about telling the best joke or who's the wittiest not about who is the most helpful/knowledgeable.

This seems to be the key.

    If only I were funnier.

  • tries very hard not to rep scott just to be a knob

  • Tynan you make me feel like a weak and slippery school girl reduced to paralysing giggling fits. Funny bastard. If it wasn't for the Rep Crunch i would put a greenie on you right now.

  • I found the "+ve repped you" comments always annoying and have never repped anyone since being on this forum, but it seems to be popular and and people like to use it. I don't think it affects this forum deeply and I don't think intervention by VB is needed.

  • yeah repping is shit, get rid of it.

  • I was even saying to object last night that one of the most laughable things is that whenever i have a rant about how shit i think the whole rep points thing is, somebody then reps me and leaves a comment agreeing that its shit...if you agree with me...PM me to tell me, dont rep me to tell me...:)

I think you put your finger on another problem--it is very easy to rep, it's right there in the poster box next to every post, whereas the PM function is more difficult to find. I'm sure quite a lot of repping can be accounted for because of this.

  • i could live with or without the repping, i think it's quite interesting what one gets rep for, often not what you expect.

however, and i think that this is the key point, i believe that there is a strong contingent of whining ninnys on this forum, and that once rep has gone, they will simply turn their attention to something else that they feel is not quite in line with How They Would Have Things.

  • But, I can't live without my snot blocks!!!

Kidding. I didn't like the idea when it was introduced, then embraced it whole-repwhore-adly but really don't think it's doing much other than causing shit so fuck it off.

    Down with reps!

  • I like the idea of a system that helps guide new members as to what an unspoken hierarchy of the forum might be, that gives visibility of those who may post a lot, be central to the community, etc. But I'm unsure whether the reputation system actually fulfils that or whether it's just a popularity contest. If it's the latter then I dislike it, but if it's the former then it still has its merits.

I'd say it's a combination of the two things really..

Like others have said, I think it encourages throw away jokes that people think will be funny based on previous 'reppage' but I doubt that this would stop if you got rid of reputation, it would just be slightly less obvious..

I can take it or leave it, as long as people don't get to caught up in how important it is then it's a way to tell people you're thinking in a similar way and a source of harmless fun.. Not much would change without it

  • Does it really encourage throw away jokes though?

The original forum was always about people taking the piss almost immediately.

In the early days I would jump on a newbie and take the piss and then 60 seconds later provide them with the answer they were seeking or a bit of knowledge. It's the same now.

At the same time I don't really see the boxes being useful for anything so..er.. what's the point.
Newbs quickly realise who is full of shit and who is helpful so you don't need funny little squares for that.

  • last night we came up with the idea of green square spoke cards. you know, so that people know who to trust in the real world...

  • I think all us 4 squarers should discuss this in depth at the secret monthly meal at Quaglino's.

  • I thought it was at the Ivy this week

  • No, we're saving the Ivy for December's Noob Stoning Day..

  • Amongst us so unbothered to actually read what repping is...mostly definitely something beyond comprehension of the idle masses.

  • I hope you will all be fine without your little comfort blankets.

  • If there is no rep system everyone remains on largely equal grounding.
That means newbies don't get overawed by the little green squares and try to get in to brown-nosing and into the 'right' cliques.
That makes for funnier flaming session in the long run.

  • "funnier flaming session in the long run"

    I'm all up for that!

    Repped!
