I though repping was about popularity, didn't know it had a real purpose

that was what i was thinking.
where do you stand on this issue Mr Boy? -

does the popularity of a user need to be displayed in this way...
its strange to look at the members list with the rep's selected. -
• #13
Repping is just a bit of fun tho', isn't it? I could quite easily live without it... Won't stop me posting retarded stuff when I'm drunk... How do you feel it's dividing the forum tho', aidan? Is there really a division? :o

I like the idea of a system that helps guide new members as to what an unspoken hierarchy of the forum might be, that gives visibility of those who may post a lot, be central to the community, etc. But I'm unsure whether the reputation system actually fulfils that or whether it's just a popularity contest. If it's the latter then I dislike it, but if it's the former then it still has its merits.
So could still be good, but could be bad. I'm pretty much on the fence, but I'm very willing to let people decide anything I don't feel really passionate and sure of. So it's very healthy to ask the question and for me to change the forum in reaction to that.

Its not fun when rudeness, ignorance and other such ills are encouraged by this system.
its divided people by status...like in some way someone with 4 green things is better then someone with 1. It doesn't sit well with me. -
• #16
I don't think the forum will become more polite if the rep system goes. But the rudeness, ignorance and status will make a lot of people leave.

• #17
There seem to be more throw-away lame/rude/idiotic/annoying comments than there were before repping. Whether this has now been made part of people's behaviour on the forum, who can say? I really hope not.
-
• #18
Grammar and dyslexic spelling remains unaffected by rep points though.

So this is what the Canadian taxpayers are getting for their money? They'll be demanding a refund.

i suppose you want a +rep now.

You missed the mis-use of "was". That is only a 50% score for a pedantic post (unless there are more errors). Not rep-worthy.

if it does go can we trade our green rectangles for beer/parts?

I'll go with whatever aidan decides, I hate it when he gets cranky... Agree that the whole rep thing is pretty retarded'... Don't think it'll change the tone of the forum tho', this place is full of foul-mouthed smart-arses and has been the whole time I've been here...

Although I initially disagreed with Scott when he mentioned the repping system had changed the forum i changed my mind when i read multi grooves reaction to CC's comment on his photography skills.
I don't think the repping system is serving its intended purpose. People are getting repped for the most rediculous things, i've lost count how many reps i have received for insulting shinscar. It seems to be more about telling the best joke or who's the wittiest not about who is the most helpful/knowledgeable.
The repping system is dividing the forum...thats bad :(
Love from
Aidan.
PS: don't bloody rep me! :DGlad you're back on side....you can come visit again now...:)
I stand by my initial opinions completely.
I was even saying to object last night that one of the most laughable things is that whenever i have a rant about how shit i think the whole rep points thing is, somebody then reps me and leaves a comment agreeing that its shit...if you agree with me...PM me to tell me, dont rep me to tell me...:)
