  • Does anyone know if these are better than what comes with a basic Fuji Track?

Same wheelset I'm gonna be replacing ;)

  • hmmm. h+son for work... i'd advise against it.

theres a stiff build (responsive) then theres stiff ride (uncomfortable). you'll overly fatigue your body just for fashions sake. they'll be very harsh for work and you'll prolly be grumpy and cranky by friday

what circuit you doing? westend? city? westend>city(they still do that???its been a while)

the halo's are good value - heard reports recently (on this forum?) that hub finish is a bit ropey, but had no complaints from the wheelsets or hubs that i sold in prev. job

why not get something budget/durable for work and save up for something fancy for the w/e?

although i'd really really recommend saving and investing into something like phils on open pro's. most reliable messenger wheelset i've ever had. 7 years of work around the world and changed the bearings once. trued the wheels twice (quality of the build)...

its your body and your money - its your decision... we're just here to advise

    my 2 cents

Fatigue my body? But I've been taking HTFU pills since reading posts on this forum so fatigue is now irrelevant :)

Circuit? I go wherever the fuck I'm sent at the moment due to things being pretty slow right now, W 1,2,3,8,9 SW,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 EC,1,2,3,4, E,1,2,3 SE,1,2 NW,1,2 You name it really, I almost went on a Brixton to Camden the other day before it got cancelled.

I'm currently using my durable and fuctional hybrid for work at the moment but the poor derailleur's taking a beating, hence this will be my 'nice bike' really and I was considering using it for work.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it some thought.

  • and if you get stuff online factor in shipping too...

and be aware that if you take a bunch of components into a regular store for the wheel build you might get told to f-off. get your wheelbuilder to treat you as a "private" client if they work in a store

  • htfu? please enlighten?
been a while since i was on circuit - metro was a bit different - not many tags per day but lots of distance... ec1>wimbledon etc. happy days (hobbles away slowly for more medication)

  • I think metro are still like that, fuck riding to Wimbles and back, I'm alright at burning it round town but long rides rinse me up after a while and day in day out would be knackering. Not that long ago me and a friend considered Kingston to Central and back again to be a pretty big ride.

HTFU = Harden The Fuck Up

Hub cycles is just a workshop so shouldn't be a problem there.

  • why lace expensive rims and expensive spokes on the cheapest hubs?

  • Well I'm on a budget and something had to take priority so I went for the parts that would contribute to the wheel staying true over ride quality, I'm sure I'll upgrade the hubs soon enough, these are just to get me rolling. They seem to be perefctly functional hubs anyway.

  • Yep, big help thanks.

    1. Hubs from here http://www.velomax.co.uk/displaydetail.php?product_id=466
    2. I have inner tubes + tyres already so didn't need to factor them into my budget.
    3. I was pretty much after a stiff ride (good god what am I saying), these will be for my work (courier) bike and I much prefer a more direct feel with the road and feel a bit disconnected when the ride is dampened a bit.** I don't do 'whacking up curbs'** as I get enough punctures as it is without bringing pinch flats into the equation
    4. Considering going to this geezer www.thehubcycles.co.uk to get wheels built, 25% messenger discount ;)

WTF? What do you do, throw the packages into the buildings?

Craig is right Fester; you don't need stiff wheels for couriering they'll just knacker you.

  • WTF? What do you do, throw the packages into the buildings?

Yeah? Don't you? QTFU man.......... (quicken)

I usually just stop outside the building I'm delivering to, step onto the curb and take two steps towards the railing and lock my bike or go up onto the pavement via the dipped curb when approaching the building. I've already had two fines for riding on the pavement so I'm not too keen riding up onto them, as well as the aforementioned pinch flats on the rear tyre.

  • I rebuilt another wheel for a friend of mine and decided to take some pictures along the way.
    I have put them in a set on Flickr so you can get a step by step view;

Might help if you have a go at it.

  • Yeah? Don't you? QTFU man.......... (quicken)

You are no longer my son. From this day on,* I have no son!*

  • Ha! I was testing your fatherly dedication and seeing how easily you would dismiss me! Really I bunnyhop from drop to drop........in one go, each time, you've just walked away from the greatest protege you'll never have!

  • That's ok Fest; I don't need a protege, I've seen A Star Is Born.

  • hi,
excuse my ignorance, but those planet x wheels have got fixed hubs?
or is it fixed and free?
    thanks.

  • Good question.. these could be a useful wheelset for the Contador..

  • what,so you're ditching all the components on the WACster, hippy?

  • Yeah, why not? They're mostly fucked. :)

The BB is new, the cranks are fine, the chainring, chain and cog are pretty tired. The rear wheel would be a lot better with another spoke, the front rim is fucked. Bars now have nice chunk out of them. Forks appear ok. Brakes work but not the best.

  • well I have some parts kicking about if you need owt

  • You're probably on your way to Manch, but what have you got?
I think I'll go back to running drops with hoods since the aim is to get the setup more like my road bike. I need bars, stem, hoods, tape, steerer spacers,

  • Would these Planet X track wheels not just get destroyed on crap london roads? I'm thinkin about getting some for a project. Anybody got any experience with them?

  • Not yet.. but I plan to throw some on the Cuntdor one day..

My only concern with these are the alloy nipples and machine builds are typically inferior to hand-built wheels.

    I just ordered a set.

  • you can get custom built wheels here starting at £75 and up to £140

    http://www.kiwicycles.com/wheels.htm

  • Yea ive tried ordering a set from Kiwi, say its gonna take 2 weeks and after that is gonna be the Xmas period.
Might as well build my own, gotta learn at some point.

  • 2 bikes in our house with On One wheel bits...

    1. An OTP Pompino (same wheelset as above i believe?). It's not had enough milage on it to say... but the owners fat and lazy (therefore hard on wheels) because he's used to full sus mountain bikes :P

    2. I've been running those Track Hubs on my daily bike for 14 months. Rear is still super smooth, front is as good as the day i bought it.

I'd say those wheels are perfect budget wheels for a hack. Although like hippy I've never owned factory built wheels so don't know the deal with that.
