  • Awwww. Thanks Nick-Nack, I do try! To be fair I did train a fair bit. Been doing an hour two to three times a week for the last couple of months... and was still doing a couple of sessions including a masters until fairly recently.

Will be keeping an eye on the crossover for sure.

Tell you what though, the main thing I learned from the pics is that i need to shed a few pounds. I knew it anyway but it always stings to have it confirmed in pixels. Urgh.

  • it's the pork, pudding, pasta and beer.

  • It's the Married life ! :)

    ( you look fine.... anyway fat floats more ;) ) ( I should know ! )

    :D

  • Totally. Am going for Otter tirak tomorrow will report back on Weds.

  • Tirak?

A typo so advanced I have no idea what it supposed to be. "trial" maybe?

  • I take it you live near folkestone then ?

Nah - go there once a month to do some sea swimming as I can't abide pools. http://www.coldwaterculture.com/

Got talked into a Channel relay this weekend - June 2014. Must be less shit at swimming by then.

  • Does this tool work for anyone else?

    Swim Time Prediction Tool

(i.e. does it reasonably predict longer distance times compared with shorter distances.)

It doesnt seem to calculate ??

I think there may be something on swimsmooth. Basically you need to find your css/threshold (critical swim speed)..... hang on..... http://www.swimsmooth.com/training.html

June 2014 - i think you can manage that :)

Just need to rid the wetsuit and do a 2 hour stint in the sea a 16c or less.

What is that link ? Are they the people you swim with ?

    Why Folkestone ?

  • First swim back today. Steady 2k.
Shoulder hurts... should be loose now, so tmw should be better.

Will sign up for a 10k open water for this summer tonight, and switch training pattern to getting 3k in 40mins or less (currently comfortably 45mins), so that 1.5k is sub 20mins for Triathlon.

Need to have some technique lessons, may ask at the pool, may join the university club (though I may wait till next year when I should be back to full fitness).

This summer I'll actually be in London for a fair bit- if anyone wants to go for a big ride to somewhere amazing to swim? And I'll be joining the Serp... I can not wait to be away from Nottingham.

  • props to you mad channel swimmers. have discussed it a few times but never (ahem) taken the plunge.

so what of this 10k dart relay thing then? are we serious?

Yeah, managed without the wettie up to Xmas, when it was down to 7C, but then took a couple of months off and got soft.

The guy who runs Coldwater Culture is a friend and a Folkestone lifeguard, and organises these meetings of freezy freaks down there every month, swimming off the beach or following the pilot boat (good practice for the Channel guys) - it's just over an hour from London, so I tag along. Painfully cold, but I'd still prefer it to swimming in lukewarm spit and kiddywee in a pool.

  • Turned up with a mate for Otter masters at 7 to find they didn't start till 8. Managed to blag our way into a "Swim for Tri" class that was just starting instead. Was fun just blasting freestyle sprints (18x50m on 2mins at 100%) for an hour. Don't think i'll be going back to that though as it's all freestyle and there wasn't anywhere to progress really... I started in the third of four lanes but quickly got bumped up to the fastest lane and was leading that after one set. Was fun racing the one other guy who was at a similar pace to me. They set it up so we went off together and tried to beat each other and retain our times. Managed to keep within a second of my opening 36 second gambit for 50m. Certainly got a good workout.

The pool at Guys is small with narrow lanes, hot and not all that clean. Hung around after to chat to the Otter coach and watch them train for a bit. He was super nice and said to come back next week at the right time. To give a comparison he reckoned we'd be in the slowest of the four lanes in that club. The top two lanes are strictly the preserve of their olympian and european masters champions. eek.

  • What Dart relay ? The Dart 10k, sold out ages ago.

Did you used to swim for a club ? As a child i mean .

  • Yes. Started in the states as a kid. My last record got beaten the year before last...
When I moved back here- swam for Wandsworth- until I destroyed my shoulder playing rugby.

Ahh ok. That explains the speed. :)

  • I don't see myself as fast. Just very capable of maintaining a rhythm.
I am very, very competitive (its part of the education in America)

How often do you guys kick? I need to sort mine out.
That and my breathing needs to be double-sided- purely for the sake of my neck (but thats easy to sort out).

  • I can mantain a rhythm. Just not a fast one. Dont care. Not bitter at all. : /

I changed to bi-lateral breathing quite a few years back now..... took some getting used to, but I prefer it. It's just natural now.
I think you can notice an imbalance on one sided breathing, but it's up to the individual. I suppose it's a bit confusing to teach to children.

My kick is a constant flutter, only change it on drills, ie 1 kick per stroke - oppposite leg to opposite arm. Like the TI video, it's very calming and fluid. Could'nt swim like it all the time though.

  • Right on a more important issue; which costume !?!

It's too hard. I cant decide ! Any girls reading this ? (apart from Dooks)
    ;)

  • I think I have a 2 beat kick. Not sure now if I want to change it or just develop it into a more powerful tool for when I get a bit tired late into a race.

  • I think mine turns into a 2 beat when i am trying to push myself, ie the last 500 on that 5k the other day.

  • where's the other costume pic gone ?

  • Rising sun of the two I can see :)

    #notagirl

Cool, thats the one I have just ordered from the US !

You lot take ages to reply. Need more women on this thread. ( Dooks-where are you ???)

    :D

  • You should get Dooks to model them before taking the decision.

Nice try but Dale dogsballs is definitley the one to go to for all your mankini modelling needs. I vote Japanese fish tattoo style if that means anything.

Where are these from anyway? Not that I intend to purchase the same items for personal use, but wherever it is obviously has a more interesting range of swimwear than swimshop.
