  • thanks dude. good pics. i have a good point of entry, catch and high elbow pull. i know this because i used to very much not and have worked on all of them. what i hadn't been giving any thought to was what my hand was doing at entry. only a small thing granted but it all adds up right?

my latest bugbear is head position in the water. i've been though the lot. when i was a kid my coach had us doing freeestyle with the water level just above our eyebrows. when i was going though my total immersion influenced return to swimming a few years back i developed a much lower head poition, almost totally neutral looking directly down and concentrated on rotating round that imaginary line from the top of my head to my toes.

but lately i've been thinking that this isn't necessarily the quickect way to swim , requiring, as it does, a lot of rotation to breathe. i've been trying to find a happy medium but keep finding that im really not rotating enough and (horror of horrors) have started to lose form and drop the occasional elbow while my concentration is diverted to head position and rotation.... gah. i think i'm going to go back to t.i. head position.

  • I have a canoe you can borrow..

So, I've just read the rules and it seems backstroke is not allowed... I should probably have read them before rather than relying on this thread for all the info...

Has anyone ever broken the rules? I'm a bit worried now about getting bored with just doing breaststroke.

Dont start me on the canoe saga !

Other arf went to collect the one he bought on ebay last sunday. Woke up monday morning, looked at the car and it had this huge orange whale on top of it. Not joking - it is longer than the car ! Im surprised he didnt get stopped on the way home.
Takes two people to lift ! It is sitting in the garden now-probably where it will live the rest of its life. : /

What size is your canoe ? Can it actually be lifted ? :)

I dont see why you can't alternate between breast and back. I wouldnt advise all back.
Last year a group of swimmers at London fields did it all Fly ! Impressive.

  • LFGSSS relay team? I'm in.

I dont mind doing half the whole swim with someone, but thats £40 each.

  • i'm game! EDIT: for a relay team. 5k in open water might be a mit much for me at the moment. although...

    5k fly? that's fucking nuts.

my parents have a canoe that my grandad made when they were kids. it has a curved wooden frame, covered in thick blue plastic sealed with smears of yellowing resin of some kind. we used to sink in it on family holidays in the lake district as kids. the paddles were made from broom handles with bits of shaped kitchen worktop (formica still intact) screwed to the end.

I'm hoping to be qualified to teach by the end of the year.... you can be my subject if you like ?

  • Ha, you'd have your challenge cut out there. :)

Well, I thought I might measure it for you but I can't quite see where it is at the moment.. how ridiculous. It's yellow as well.. It's a Perception Kiwi 2 - great fun. Yes a bit stressful getting it on top of the car but worth it.. I think most canoes are longer than cars by the way, unless you have a limousine!

Would come in handy tomorrow.. one member of the team has dropped out due to asthma and a bad cough, another because she has a dance rehearsal and the best swimmer has a bad cold and shoulder injury.

  • Surely you can never have too many goggles ?

So tired, couldnt sleep last night, im such a child ! 3 hours to go..... : /

  • I tried to do some work this morning. Managed a few hours, now full of nervous energy.....
Hope you have a good swim.
    I hope I make it.

  • It's weird isnt it.... it's just a swim in a pool, but all of a sudden it's a major deal....

You'll be fine. Im just gonna get to 2.5k, then another 1k etc..... only just having breakfast.
Had some soreen, a mini muffin, now some white toast and marmalade. Not even hungry.

  • Good luck guys! I'm 'carbo loading'.

  • Good luck chaps!

  • Bleurrgh.... feel sick....

    GoodLuck Y'all x

  • Good luck all.
Pumping myself up with Eels, Modest Mouse, and Wagner.

  • Done.
    1.29 ! Happy with that :)
So sleepy now. Feeding my face at the in laws.

  • great time dude. i'll be stunned if i go under 90 mins this year. great work. fill yer boots!

  • Incredible time nick-nack!!!!
1:21 here, a bit disappointed but I got my timing massively wrong in the first 100 laps... Way too slow, got out feeling fresh.
Went straight to a Brazilian steakhouse.
    Hell yeah!

  • i've just started swimming more regularly (only about 30mins twice a week though), and am becoming aware that my crawl technique is pretty shocking.

does anyone have any website suggestions that are good on advising on this kind of stuff? or general tips for a fit but inefficient swimmer?

hours of stuff on there, I found it very useful.

Thankyou. Weldone you too ! I got held up quite a bit in my lane and ideally could knock a couple of minutes off that... hey-ho....

Am off to bed in a mo, need sleep.
