I want a new wetsuit at the moment and went to try a zone3 aspire on yesterday, the shop didn't have my size so suggested a huub Archimedes instead, it's a very nice wetsuit but it's twice the price!
Apparently zone 3s come up a bit large so I'll take a punt on wiggle and return it if it doesn't fit...

There are nasal bath things, basically the nose equivalent of eye drops. I've heard it advised that washing the top of the your nose out will help.
But not something I suffer from.
When I was swimming three/four times a week I was permanently in discomfort from this. Nose clips all the way for me was the solution.

I had a very brief swim analysis done yesterday, really pleasing to see I do look like I imagine I do in the water, the last 9 months of training has paid off! Need to adapt my catch a little but otherwise I look smooth, coordinated and fast!
Nearly under an hour for 3.8km on Sunday as well!

I've started swimming a couple of times a week and I'm not sure on what pool etiquette is. I usually go in the middle lane as, well, I'm not fast and I'm not slow. But it seems like not everyone gives it that much thought. Last week there was someone swimming at precisely half my speed in my lane, who got really annoyed when I kept overtaking, then today there was someone slower than me in the fast lane – who, on closer inspection, was using flippers and a float to attempt to displace all the water in the whole pool.
Can I say something? The lifeguard didn't seem bothered and no one speaks at the pool. Should I carry on passive aggressively splashing them when I overtake?

Push a Lion bar out of your trunks as you pass them.
A Lion Bar yesterday. -

Pool etiquette is often wishful thinking. Most lifeguards will do fanny all, unless someone kicks up a big stink.
Or lion bars the pool.
Training in public sessions is a case of suck it up and deal with it, I'm afraid, unless you go at very unsociable hours.
You will be swum into. You will be shouted at. You will feel like killing people.
Join a slevless club.

I've only once made a big fuss at the pool and that was when there was a guy swimming like a spider in the fast lane. A couple of times I genuinely thought he was drowning. After being kicked several times I complained and got my money back.
The pool I've been going to isn't too busy so I don't get swum into and no one has shouted at me. There's not even any eye contact (or perhaps there is - I dunno, I swim without my glasses/contacts so I can't see very much). I always feel like killing people and floundering along trying to force my eyes to focus only to see that I've focused on a plaster doesn't really help.
There's a swimming pool at the end of my road but it's been closed for years now - it's due to finally open at the end of the month and swimming times are 12 noon-8pm. WTF?

Optilabs do prescription goggles for ~£50 (the "Splash" ones with ready made lenses, or £90 for "Sea Vision" with bespoke single vision lenses). I have a pair of the "Sea Vision" ones (my eyes are too different to use ready made ones) to use for training swims where I want to be able to see the clock. For casual swimming I don't bother and the world is a lovely blur.

I just keep my contacts in.

Is it possible to go outdoor swimming anywhere these days, that is not geared almost exclusively to slevless douchenozzles?
I'm hot. I want to go for a dip. I don't want to be restricted to 6am to 9am on a Sunday morning.
Anywhere?

Reading?
I have been in the Thames most days this last week.
Tonight I am going to a gravel pit / nature reserve for a cheeky dip (there are signs that say you shouldn't, so I will have a dip at dusk)
There is a bigger gravel pit nearby that I have swum in in the past but it has a bit of an algal problem at the moment and there is the Kennet, there is a lush bit where tons of kids swim
Forum dip anyone? -

Come out to the jubilee tw2 you should swim with others for safety but there are no boats, light currents, the local plod have told me it's not legal but they wouldn't even have a quiet word, and you can swim any time of the day.

Hullo swimming thread! I'm back in the swimming swing as I've been banned from my favourite high intensity style gym work outs like spinning but need to do some sort of exercise. Going to start at swimming for 30mins 4 times a week for a few weeks and then work out some drills from there I reckon.
Heading to Brockwell Lido tomorrow morning and very much looking forward to some outdoor swimming!
Also: new lot of physical activity = good excuse to go to Decathlon.

Annnnd back in the pool. Had my first pop at some drills that included butterfly this morning. Oh my... Am sure I got some shakes of the head from other pool users and the amount of unrest and splashing I was creating amidst the nice calm lengths of others. So - last year when I learned to crawl more efficiently, the answer was basically ' don't kick'. Massive difference that meant I could now swim for about an hour without to much problem from previous 20 mins killing myself. What's the secret for butterfly? I manage about two thirds of a length before almost passing out. First half I feel like i'm ahead of my wake, then just get caught up and become a flailing mess. Any tips? Just do it more? It was my first go I guess. Good workout though.

If you want to swim butterfly go to a club / get a coach!
-
• #1947
^ This.
The last time I was coached was probably 25 years ago but what I remember from butterfly is that it's about rhythm. Once it clicks it seems effortless compared to before, but it'll take proper coaching to put all of the bits in place.

Just had a lovely hour in the river, swimming with the dogs. Soon after I left the heavens opened and we had a proper thunderstorm, sadly I was already home, I would love to have swum through it.

Not a good idea to be in the water during a thunderstorm, though.

Local pool (which I may be joining) has Swimtag, anyone use it and find it useful?
