Well you know, different strokes...
I can't get my head around the idea of swimming in the Serpentine. Why did you feel static in it? Too much bird poo?
I do know.
I'm charged up, I'm kind of wooden,
I'm barely moving, I study motion.
I study myself, I fooled myself,
I'm charged up, It's pretty intense.You know.

Tumble turns are easy when youve done them for years.
Learning them needs persistence.
And a few techniques.
1 breathe out of your nose as you turn over.... dont and youre gonna get a nose full and then feel the burn
2 relax, slow to start with
3 practice practice practice.Start with a noodle or woggle and do them in semi shallow water first. From standing.
The tighter your chin is to chest.. the faster you go.
Remember to breathe out your nose :)
Kip the hips and feet in line with the horizon. Just rotating straight around and back to standing to start with. -

- Don't slow down
A lot of people I've seen when they’re learning slow down before the wall so the they’re basically stopped then trying to do the turn (in slow motion) – this doesn’t work. Go full speed in, one big pull with your leading arm then follow that hand with your eyes/head whilst flicking your legs over. Your momentum carries you into the wall feet first, then just push away.

If you find breathing out of you nose hard (not sure why but I did ?! ) instead you can hum, same thing but its harder to breathe out all your air in one go

3 weeks sans post? Seriously, has everyone stopped getting wet for winter?
Lovely swim off Margate yesterday - water's still about 15.5 degrees, no shiver at all getting out, despite the wind. Also visited the rather wonderful new Turner Gallery and a number of smaller galleries and funky little shops - Margate is not quite the shitpit I remember from a few years ago.
9/10 - would swim again.

I've moved to New York. Turns out cycling and swimming are two things this city is shitty for... As this is a swimming thread, i'll stick to the latter. There seem to be no pay per use swimming pools. Relly don't want to sign up to a gym as i hate them, but to even use the local YMCA just for swimming is $67 per month.. Only go about once a week. Annoying. Vaguely looking into swimming in the ocean on weekends, but would rather do it with a club or someone else who knows what they're doing.. On the plus side, i guess all the extra fat is making me more bouyant.

Swam in the Jubillee River this morning for about 2km in 40 minute social swim.
the thermometer said water temperature was 10 degrees...
everyone i was with took their wetsuits off before getting out... madness!
Running home it felt like I was running with bricks instead of feet, and my hands were too cold and inflexible to put on socks or gloves.

3x1hr swims in Folkestone this weekend, nature gave us a bit of a showcase - really different conditions every time.
Sat am - flat calm, sunny, high tide.
Sat pm - got in as the storm hit, really hard to swim, strange type of heavy chop, waves coming from all angles, proper graft.
Sun am - very high tide, still v windy, but proper rollers/breakers, much easier to swim in, immense fun.Still reckon the water temp is about 15 degrees, so feeling it a little after an hour. Swimming in pools >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Also, at the Channel Swimming Association's awards dinner Sat eve, my mate won the trophy for greatest feat of endurance for his early crossing this year - the longest crossing ever done in temp that low (22hrs) - delighted for him.

Doe's cycling more make your swimming shite ?
I'm down to 2 x 3k swims a week now as the cycling has got hold of me.
I seem to be getting worse in the pool.

Great as complementary activities, though.

Nice swim down in Folkestone yesterday. Getting a bit chillier, but not too bad - the main difference is air temp outside the water being much colder. Managed 45 mins, could have stayed in longer, but was on my own and didn't want to take any risks. Fine day for it - mildly breezy with light rain, good rolling waves to make it interesting.
Then got out and watched the rugby. Wish I'd drowned myself instead.

Anyone else still swimming? Anyone? Temperature is down to 8 degrees, so hard to stay in for any length of time. Did manage 3x30min swims, each followed by 2hrs of uncontrollable shivering. Good fun, however, and I had my first winter 'win' (last man out).
Amusingly, last month we were unaware of the local press monitoring our activities - http://www.kentonline.co.uk/folkestone_express/news/brave-swimmers-ride-the-waves-8370/ The comments are good, hearty, local press quality fare - particularly Cakeordeath, who may have anger issues.

Haven't been out for ages due to cycling and lack of others to swim with but I will go for a dip in Cornwall over Christmas.
I was trying to get some club mates to go in on Xmas day, but I think a lot of people find it's an wakeful lot of effort to only go in for 20 minutes which is understandable...
this is how we do it
