  • you aren't going to need a wetsuit

I swim frequently in open water, and I have yet to wear one!

  • secret swim?

  • Sorry Sheathy, we cannot tell you about it

  • :(

  • It's for your own good.

  • 8 pm tonight, I think Hampstead Ponds is the London venue.

  • Sounds good.minus the.plugs...
Try doing lengths with fractured collarbone, bloody horrendous.
Only the sauna by the pool is getting my devotion right now.

  • ^ kick drills, make yer legs super strong ready for running season ;)

I guess that the orthopaedic folks didn't tell you not to lift your arm above shoulder height.

You can re-break collar bones pretty easily - TM did it by lifting a TV remote control.

My dad's colleague broke his tying his shoelaces...

  • Silly things to do while riding your bike, let's be honest.

  • Back OT; Anywhere not too far from Ealing that'd be good for wild swimming? Seen the documentary above and I need a fix.

  • Ian Thorpe will be at Tooting Bec Lido tomorrow 9am onwards giving tips to swimmers, check his twitter for details. @ianthorpe

My twitter swimming buddy Jenny Landreth (she of excellent swimming pool review blog, collaborator on Lido project with Darren Hayman and, I think, wife of comedian MarkThomas fact fans) went along to this and posted:

It wasn't until I said it out loud to my teenage son that I realised "Thorpedo" might want to rethink that nickname.

  • Got "lung burn" again today which i've since discovered is a strained diaphragm from turning yourself inside out to keep to the split times.

EDIT - Not sure what happened to my previous post containing a "hilarious" anecdote about "Thorpedo" wanting to rethink that nickname.

  • @Jim1985;
I think Tiswas went to some tri swim coaching sessions. Cant remember what it was called.. Red top or Red something..... it should be on this thread a few pages back.

@Jim1985 Red Top are based at London Fields. Very good small group and one-on-one tuition but very expensive. They got a friend of mine from complete non swimmer to respectable half Ironman time and regular masters swimmer within a year.

Swim for Tri is cheaper and has various sessions round London. I snuck in with another mate to check it out once and the standard was pretty remedial.

Cally Masters on Caledonian road has technique sessions on Sunday you can just turn up and pay on the door for (as you can for all of their sessions on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday).

  • Here's a bit of Otter for you.
It's hard enough just decoding that.

Is that really a 5.6k session?

  • @Jim1985 Red Top are based at London Fields.
Also St Georges & Mile End.

Pricey, but 1 on 3 or 4 coaching.

  • I still don't know what most of that technical training guff means. I assume MVO2 is something to do with peak anaerobic effort? Maximum O2? Dunno. anyone shed any light?

The coach did explain that the set was designed to take you from aerobic (the 50m repeats at 1:00 and 1:10) though the lactate threshold (the repeats on 1:05 and 0:55) into full on anaerobic max (the 0:45 repeats followed by a 75M sprint).

All I know is that I got lung burn and arms like wet noodles by the end of it.

    Fun though.

or basically, this is really gonna HURT !!!

    .

    Thats wot i said, innit.

  • You are wise.

Had a lovely sea swim down at Hove on Saturday. Couple of good half hour swims back towards Brighton into a pretty fierce current then wizzing back towards Hove with it. Brought wetsuits but there was no need. Water was the perfect temperature. Could have stayed in there all day. Lovely.

  • By complete contrast I have been swimming the rivers and have taught my newest dog Milly to join me. I got her a year ago and she was frightened of water, then she took to paddling and finally a week ago to swimming. Now I get in accompanied by three dogs who swim along with me, she is really enthusiastic and powerful (she's a German Shepherd) and once we are under way we can cover surprising distances.

And on a completely different note I assume you are all following this epic swim?

    Fuck that!

    Seriously.

From here on in, it's flowery swmming cap and old laydee breaststroke.

Except tonight, though, when I'm going to do pyramids.

  • Heh, I'm still reverting to breast stroke, I keep trying to do crawl, but always end up going at the rate I used to be able to go at- and blowing up.
