  • Plurabelle, did you ever see the documentary about one of these places? It was aired a few years ago now, but reading your post reminded me of it. It was full of some lovely shots of the pool and members, as well as interviews with old boys who had been swimming there all their lives. I have just had a quick google for it, but can't find anything much. It might be this:

Film: Liquid Paradise - memories of 120 years of swimming in "the Pond" Production of a documentary film, archive and photographic exhibition about a Victorian swimming pool in Edinburgh. This involved wide ranging interviews with local community members and pool users.
    from here: http://margin.org/project.html
I'm not sure though as I don't quite see why an architect would be making that kind of film.

No, I didn't, thanks for the tip. I'll have a root about.

  • this plus ipod shuffle?
someone asked for a swim mp3ingy.....
i need to go back to swimming. badly. as soon as im back in london i'm getting in the pool.

  • I tried to go for a sneaky sneak off work and go for a quiet early swim last night. But when I got there I found the pool thick with kids. It was like child soup. Shrieking child soup.

So I left and went for a run instead (two days in a row after over a month of no running at all) and now I can barely walk. Thanks a lot human croutons.

  • Is anyone a member of the Serpentine and a regular:
    http://www.serpentineswimmingclub.com/
OR would anyone else like to join and join me for regular freezing swims between 6 and 9:30 AM on a set day(s).
Which may or may not include Triathlon (ie. wetsuited) practice as well?

at £20 for a year its a fucking bargain and the races are fun on saturdays

  • I need a new place to Swim once I move offices to the West End. But this

When the lake is frozen the swimmers break a hole in the ice to enable them to get their morning constitutional swim.

    Should read

When the lake is frozen the swimmers thank God, turn around and go home

  • Ironmonger Row is closing for 2 years in May. Coincidently our company is moving offices to the West End in June. Anyone recommend a good Pool in the West End, or en route from North London. What about Swiss Cottage, anyone been there?

  • The Oasis in Covent Garden? A colleague swims there regularly and likes it (and he's one fussy bugger).

  • Oasis is very busy at the moment as they are doing repairs to the social housing so the outdoor pool is mostly closed. Will be till 7th June though so not too bad. Normally the outdoor pool is pretty good, 27.5 metres and it's nice to swim outdoors.

Swiss Cottage is great, I can cycle home from there in 10 minutes and I've been going there a lot recently, love it. It's so nice and modern and the changing rooms are all clean and well designed. I also find I swim fast in it too.

I'm moving to Newington Green in May and was planning on using Ironmonger Row. By May 2012 I'll probably have moved somewhere else. So pretty gutted to hear that...

  • Cheers for the info guys. Swiss Cottage will be on my commute. Do you go before work Fox? Is it busy when you go. You probably swim faster because the water is warmer - no?

    Go to London Fields!

  • +1 to above.
No one keen on the Early morning Serp swims?
    they're great!
if your west end includes chelsea- BRM likes Chelsea pool- not tried it myself though.

  • I really must get back into swimming after reading this. I'm also going to start running with the Mrs as she ask me to start running with her.

What would you guys recommend for a good routine? Say run 2 nights a week then swim 2 lunchtimes a week? I also have to get my cycling in there somewhere too!

  • We have showers at work, so having a shower there then cycling to work doesn't make much sense, so I go after. So far it's not been too busy. I'm sure it would be pretty quiet in the morning.

The water there isn't that warm at all actually - Oasis is typically 28 degrees, when I got in yesterday it felt pretty cold but that's good if you're going to spend 40 minutes plus really going for it, you warm up pretty quickly.

  • God didn't create swimming pools for me to swim in a lake!

  • I'll certainly try it. Have heard good things from a swimming friend who used to live in Dalston.

How long is it? And do people actually go fast in the fast lane? I have a problem with the swimming equivalent of nodders in the fast lane not going fast enough and getting it my way!

HA! We would get on. Nodders in the Ironmonger row fast lane. Nodders on Old Street when I get out the pool.

Ollie loves a good Nodder too

I used to get regular swim-rage at exactly that. I'm a lot more zen now but yeh fast lane nodders are the bane of my life there. Were you there last night btw?

  • Yeah I'm better than I used to be too. But it is very frustrating when you realise you can't have the swim you planned because of a few numpties in the fast lane, although I do find eventually they either go home or move lanes.

Do you mean Ironmonger Row? If so not been there for ages, my last swim was at Swiss Cottage on Monday night, probably going there again tonight too.

  • Is that you?

    hello

  • Is that you?

    it is.

    hello.

  • 2+ k today in my first group training session in 2+ years.
Felt shit at the beginning and I got angry that I couldn't complete 4 laps of 'fly, which I used to compete at 200m level as a kid, but really happy about it, and got better and better as muscle memory kicked in and boosted me so the pyramid was finished way faster than started, and though I was fully pushing it, my recovery time was unreal!
So happy- as you can tell- tomorrow morning might be different though!
I hope not as I just want to get back in the pool!

I actually, and surprisingly feel great- no aches- and it's the first swim of the month for me!
going to try and get a swim in today as well.

  • ^ Nice one henry.
Haven't done "fly" for almost 2 decades n all.
Just started putting back crawl into my sessions.
Good to open out the body.
The morning Serp sessions sound hardcore.
I swam in there last year, and it was bitter (even with a wetsuit)
