i was going to try and explain the different motivating factors for why people enter competitions in any amateur discipline but just could not be bothered as someone may do it better than me

If I won a race the result would probably be the same as when I won an alleycat the other month, or an Eastway training run a few years ago - nothing short of sheer confusion and mild embarassment. Thus I shall not be racing. Even though I'm a WINNER!

I have never entered a bike race, because I may well lose. But I have entered lots of running, orienteering and adventure races knowing I will win. So that clears it all up I think.

Horses for courses (though I stress I am not likening anybody here to our equine brothers and sisters).
I wouldn't ever race. Except to the fridge/pub/remote/herb/bed. And then, not specifically against anyone else, more in a PB way.

A colleague of mine was trying to persuade me to enter a charity "fun" run, and naturally I refused. "Come on," he said, "it's for special needs kids." I thought "hang on, I could win this."

I've left the face touching game a long time ago. The risks outweighed the financial gain.
In your world, maybe. Nowhere else.
