  • completely stand up guy

That explains how I sometimes feel when talking to Skully, then. :)

  • Wow, really impressed by the job Skully did. A true craftsman. Saddle looks good and feels mad comfortable. Don't have any pics, perhaps Skully has some he can put up. I'd definitely recommend his service.

  • Here's a couple of crappy photos of yours Shinigami. You're a true gent. Loved chopping this as it's a Team Pro, the best one to do a chop on, as they're the thickest hide. Although the hardest to cut, I broke a couple of blades doing it.

    Thanks for the badge!

  • Here's a stamp job for Skivers' brother in/out law. Looks bloody ace!

  • Thanks for the kind words^^^^, TomGold.

To show what a good blocking out can do to a saddle that hasn't been kept properly tensioned using the bolt, and has sagged quite a bit under the sit bones ... It was soaked in warm water, stuffed out with paper back to its old shape, and then dried out carefully. And after that, tensioned up using the bolt and chopped.

  • Unkle Skully - What do you know about carving into leather saddles?

    Hi man.

Well... not a lot. I have heard that Jacqui and Teddy's tweed run ones were hand done, presumably using an engraver's pen, or something similar. I know mattbaddesigner (at least I think it was matt) did some freehand stuff on a saddle, a few others have tried. I liked what Van Uden has done to his saddle for his Raleigh, kind of calligraphic lettering. I wouldn't have much faith in my sketching abilities to do anything artistic, but the calligraphy I liked.

However I don't have the patience or inclination to offer this for anyone else. I have letter stamps. I trim, or do a lace up job with punched holes, and try to restore sagged hides. That's it really.

  • I want SLAIN on my pre-war polo B17, Uncle Skully... We need to do this... And pronto... I'll give it a feed tonight in preparation...

  • I have a saggy hide... That's normal for an old saddle, right? ;]

Yep! I'll be stamping at the Jumble on saturday, I'll be there until 11 from whatever time it starts. i.e. an hour after Justin's got there and nabbed anything decent.

Well, it's worth using the tension bolt - very gently on a an old one, and be sure it's not damp when you do this. If there's any tearing around the rivets then maybe not. Feed very minimally, and reapply from time to time until it stops feeling dried out, rather than putting loads on at once. If it's really uncomfortably saggy, tieing it under with lacing is a good idea. If it rides fine, don't fix it. Unless that ;] means you're kidding about your leathery turkeyneck, in which case HAH! (insert pointy Simpsons bully pic)

  • Intending on attanding the jumble this sunday http://www.lfgss.com/thread45805-3.html if anyone's interested in stamping their saddle WhileUWait, or meet to collect any saddles for trims and chops. Any letters I can squeeze on there for £15. Anyone wishing to do this should let me know.

  • Many thanks for letting me twist your arm, you're a gent!
Skullys chopping service is highly recomended.

  • Skully,

Newbie here, any chance of getting a saddle done for a Canadian?

  • skully skully skully YouTube - Bueller...
    do you still do chop?

  • polishing mine in the sun now, listening to brand nubian.

  • Hey skully, I bought a very cheap second hand brooks of the bay - One of side of the cantle plate is bent inwards - making it uneven - What would be the best way to bend it back? Or would it be safer to hammer the other side down to match it?

  • ^ can get you a pic if that would help.

  • It'd probably be ok to wack it back in shape. It might break, it might not. It's only a saddle. Have a go. Go slowly, don't just murtle it.

Sounds like the bike it was on may have been dropped.

  • I need more skully stamps, you still doing LMNH?

  • Looks like it was dropped yeh. I'll have a bash at it latter. The leather is in suprisingly good nick and will probably be worth something to someone if it breaks.

  • Just thought that I'd report back from my cycle to Paris on a 30 yr old Pre Softened Brooks Pro cut by the Skull Meister. Like an armchair! Everyone else was slapping on the Assos Chamois cream, I just cycled, drank and ate... marvelous.... thanks Skully.

  • too much info. what has been pictured cannot be unpictured :-(
