  • North.. East.. two places I no go.. ;)
Get dogs to fix it.. he needs the brownie points.
Still sounds like the headset to me. Is it threaded/threadless?

  • threadless

  • if i push down on the seat and drop the front end of the bike it rattles...

    Valve locknut?

  • like, i can't feel any play with the forks, they seem as solid. but im convinced its something from that area... the only thing keeping me happy right now is my haribo horror mix

  • lbs?

  • so turn up to drinks or polo or whatever, you hermit. I saw more of you when you were living in scotland than I do now

  • ive just been nieve to it... hmmm

'Nieve' - that's Scottish for 'fist'.
    Baffled

  • Valve locknut?

    +1

  • You knows it.

  • so after being sarounded by nice solid sounding bikes last night on the bridge ride i got annoyed so today i gave my bike a little bit of TLC in order to find out what was the issue with this vibration..... i think i found the problem....

on the steerer tube there is the hole where the long screws go into like the photo below:

the hole wasn't solid, it had a little bit of movement in it, i compared it to the forks that came stock with the bike and realised that it apparently should be solid, so im guessing this is where the vibration was coming from considering its appeared to solve it?

does this mean the forks are done unless you want to ride with a tiny bit of vibration?

  • Just replace the "star fangled nut"

replace star fangled nut - Google Search

  • how much does a new star fangled nut cost and are they easy to pick up at most lbs?
also, how hard are they to change over, are special tools required? i had a look at a couple of websites with demonstrations and they both seems to use tools ive never seen.

  • Have you not been taught how to use google. Come on man, I know you have internet access in Scotland!
Read some of the shit in the link I posted!

  • Come on man, I know you have internet access in Scotland!

    i don't live in scotland.

  • I know. But you was from up there.. now read a bit more before asking silly questions.

    And remember: www.justfuckinggoogleit.com ;)

  • the SFN is not the cause of the vibration.

and it won't rattle when the top cap bolt is tight, unless the whole SFN is lose in the steerer (unlikely)

  • anybody care to buy a set of genesis carbon forks?

  • the SFN is not the cause of the vibration.

and it won't rattle when the top cap bolt is tight, unless the whole SFN is lose in the steerer (unlikely)

What if the threaded part has become detached from the star part? Possible?

  • What if the threaded part has become detached from the star part? Possible?

yeah yeah, thats what has appeared to have happened, the star itself seems solid however the nut had a wobble to it and is loose, the problem has gone now i stuck my stock forks on it and thats the only thing after a good while of searching that it could be!

  • even so, when the bolt is tight is shouldn't rattle should it, as it'll be held by the tension in the bolt.

and yes, I know the top cap should be slightly loosened after the headset is adjusted and the stem clamped up.

  • I guess, but what if there's no preload from the top cap bolt? I can't remember.. were the forks loose at all? If you hold the brake and rock the bike do you feel movement in the headset?

Maybe there's something loose rattling in the fork steerer?

  • Try one of these, You may be able to find a cheaper one if you look. Its just an idea.

  • well, as said before i don't have a brake on it however i stood infront of my bike and locked the front wheel with my knees then rocked it back and forth and there was movement, the change of forks seems to have stopped this and the forks that caused it seem fine other than the little woble in the star

"if you ride hard buy this. get rid of your gay ass star nuts"

    Hah

sounds like you just didn't have your headset adjusted properly
