  • what time do people head on out on sunday?/is anyone going this weekend?
ive finally got some time off from either getting frost bite or breaking my foot so i can come out to play:D

  • we come down 11, 11 30ish

@ Harvey, i might not be able to make it london actually, or our own polo at all, so i think im backing out for this sunday
    count me out

Surely you havent got good enough in the last week to take on the londoners?

  • I don't think we could take on anyone , i thought it would be good to learn and see what we should aim for . Rather than evolve weird rules and strange habits like creatures on the Galapagos islands . Think it'll be a good way to pick up tips on how to improve quicker .

    +1

  • +1, plus everybody enjoys a jolly to the big smoke!

We're at baby stage, if we challenged and got beat we'd just get frustrated. Plus, we need to get our bikes sorted; spinny gear, narrow bars, carbon-ish front wheels, etc. Most of us are still in the 'using my nice bike so not going to play *too offensively' *stage.

RV the mallet has been completed, thanks again for letting me at your mallet supply :) luckily, no soldiering irons or hot glue was used in the process..

Apparently, the hot thing to do to your mallet is fit concave ends, this helps accuracy hitting the ball. Any ideas on how to achieve this?

yeah dude, weve been trying to figure out how to make some. Angelo suggested making some wooden ones

  • half a tennis ball? would give you a bit of extra 'ping' perhaps. don't know how you'd attach it tho'. and may well fall off after 30 secs.

  • also I assumed you meant convex.

  • Found these NYC rules, sound sensible to me..

Note that goals can be scored if the original hit is deflected off something and then in.

    *-Two teams of three players.
-Any type of bicycle is allowed. Handlebars MUST be plugged.
-Mallets* must resemble a croquet mallet with a wide side and a round end. Modified ski poles and plastic pipe are the most common materials. The handle end of the mallet MUST be plugged.
-The ball will be a *street hockey ball
    .
-*Goals* will be a pair of orange cones spaced one bike length apart.
-If a goal cone is disrupted it is the responsibility of the player who disrupted it to fix it.
-Start of a game: Each team will be stopped behind its own goal line and the ball will be positioned at center court. Play will begin with a “3 2 1 GO!” from the sideline.
-Players may not play the ball with their feet at any time.
-Scoring a goal must be made from what started as a hit. A hit is made from the end of a player’s mallet. A “shuffle” does not count as a goal; if the ball is shuffled through the goal, play continues uninterrupted.
-After a goal is scored, the team who scored returns to their half of the court. The team who was scored on takes possession of the ball.
-Call out the score after each goal.
-Passing “backward” through the goal (from behind the goal line to in front of it, through the goal, a.k.a. “goal offsides”): When the ball is passed through the goal in this way, a goal CANNOT be scored by the first player to play the ball. Any subsequent player to play the ball may score. If a ball is shot from in front of the goal line and does not go through the goal but bounces off the back wall and comes out through the goal, the ball is in play and can be scored. A ball that crosses a goal line backwards must be “hit” before it can score.
-Players must not touch the ground, or “foot-down”. Each time a player goes foot-down, that player is out of play and may not play the ball until they ride to the side line at center court and ring the bell. Then they may return to play. Only one side of the court has a bell, not both.
-Contact rules: “Like” contact is allowed. Player to player (body to body), except grabbing or pushing with hands. Mallet to mallet (generally, hitting another player’s mallet is poor etiquette if that player is not attempting to play the ball or in front of the goal, playing goalie). Bike to bike.
-Everything else is NOT allowed: Mallet to player, player to bike, mallet to bike, etc.
-Throwing of mallets is not allowed at any time, in any situation.
-Some games are timed and end after 10 minutes. Some games are not timed.
-Most games are played to 5 points. Some games are played to 3 points.
    -Trash talking is allowed.*

  • *-Throwing of mallets is not allowed at any time, in any situation.*

    Ozzy.....!

  • concave is 'inny', convex is 'outtie'. much like most humans have a concave belly button, we too need concave mallet ends. i think convex mallet ends would make it even harder to hit the ball straight.

i wonder if flat ABS sheet could be heated and morphed? I am pondering purchasing a large sheet and making some ends up for cambridge poloists, if this heating/morphing can be achieved!

    • -Trash talking is allowed.*

    Humm...... good good :D:D

  • Oh, OK, so you DO want the ends "inny". I thought you were having them 'outy' like a pool cue tip. yes you would have to be very accurate.

  • Surely a falt end would be better than an 'inny' ?? I'm not quite sure how the logistics of an 'inny' work..
Maybe we should work on technology from golf clubs, i'm sure they have some useful properties for getting ping on the ball!!
I currently have a old ski pole lopped off with an old tin of baked beans paked with foam stuck on the end...not sure it'll hold for too long..!!

If it's anything like Bogey Mallet Mk 1, 5 minutes??

Did you get my PM? You coming to maypole tonight?

  • just so that you guys dont fall into the same mistakes, ive made some ends for my mallet out of these rubber things that go under the table legs to stop the legs scratching the floor.
Basically, even though they were the tightest fit ever, they still fall off after a few minutes of playing, and also rubber is grippy, you want your mallet head to slide accross the floor.

Anyway, what im saying is make sure the ends arent rubber, and have sliding ability.

    that is all

  • thanks Eddy .....errr... have you been smoking anything ?
