I actually think for tournaments there should be a main ref and two 'linesman' on each side like football.
Obviously this maybe overkill for some league matches, but that was my feeling after the shoreditch tourne -

Yep, I'd agree.
One ref to oversee gamesmanship and tap outs etc, another one or two to help make calls on goals and shuffles.
With the tap outs, you have to trust players to tap out when they foot fault, but refs can keep an eye on these and call them when a player doesn't tap and looks to be heading into a playing position. Works better than calling every single foot down.
Except when it's Nick ......

um, throwing of mallets should not be allowed... ever
I think, we should get as many different people to ref as much as possible (ie. if you're at a league game then give it a go), the more people that ref, the more people will realise how tough it can be, the more people will learn to listen to / respect the ref's decisions etc, etc.
+1.

I think we need a London Ref's Society.
They can ref a whole crap load of games, then write the best set of rules ever. Can also be in charge of organizing refs for tournaments. Who's going to head that up? -

yup, i'm in (thanks for the vote of confidence guys).
are any of the other potential refs coming to paris? it'd be good just to see how another city runs it.
and if you elect me to be your new president (ref), i promise, as i have promised all through this campaign, that my first act in my new office, will be to make nick tap out. god bless this league!

I think yelling for someone to tap out should only happen if it's clear they're not going to do it on their own. Otherwise people may "rely" on being told to tap out (wait to hear it before getting out of play, or even keep playing if it's not seen). Yelling should be a shaming technique, not an official call.
i fully agree, polo needs to stay self-reffed as much as possible, just because it keeps the games more friendly.
i've noticed lately that people have been calling their own shuffles, if they hit a long shot up court and it looks like the ball is heading for the goal, the shooter calls it themselves, which is great.
sounds picky but should it be 3 2 1 or 1 2 3 and should the charge start on polo each time or on the last number ???
personally i think it should be on "polo", as in "3, 2, 1, POLO!"
it doesn't really matter what people go on, so long as they agree on what to go on, it's just nice to yell polo

Sadly I can't make it to Paris due lack of cash, but I'm trusting you to make copious notes on how the Frenchies ref their games.

I also think that arguing to the point of holding up the game (with a player or ref), should warrant a sin bin/tap out also.
Tapping out...
I dont mind for throwins that people tap out a little off centre if they are not interfering with play.... I say this, cos in paris we had a slack tap in which resulted in a goal. -

It was a bad call by the judges but it's easily resolved. Future tournaments should have a bell or similar to be tapped out on. No audible noise means the player didn't tap out. -

I tried it last night (well a ref for one half the court only). It is really hard to keep concentration and too spot everything that goes on.
Definitely in a tournament there needs to be a ref (ref asst.) at each goal end. Don't want a repeat of that Shoreditch goal!
