I've gone for the gel padded bar tape, on wide Deda bars. Unfortunately could not get my existing Profile Dromo which I rode @ Flanders to fit with new SRAM Red.
I am now pondering the pavé tyres.
I discussed riding the R3 with Sigma, who didn't seem too worried by the concept. And got it insured for racing.
After my ride today, I'm still thinking 260k.
Talking with Nhatt @ the Tour Series, she's doing 100k, or maybe 150k, with all sorts of changes! :-)

I'm doing the super short 100k. I had originally wanted to do the 180k, but Lincs signed me up for the shorter one, and now I'm totally ok with that.
I'm doing a layer of bar tape (it's already there, innit), a layer of gel, then a layer of bar tape.
I'm riding my La Cruz, so it should be fairly comfy all things considered.

on the tour of flanders i had another layer of tape on the tops but it didn't really make much difference was more comfortable on the drops as the bars are flexing more at the ends than closer to the stem. tyres were just ordinary conti 23's at 80psi.

But you weigh 60kg.
-
• #83
64.2 actually

So we're both getting fat. This time last year I was 62kg. This morning I was 72kg.
No wonder I can't climb for shit anymore.

Conti tyres are recommended for their comedy failures apparently.

Fat fucks ^^
Drops are no good for me (well, we'll see how the compacts go) since I ride cobbles with the tops 'floating' in my grip. I considered double-taping but like doing things the painful way first, since I don't know any better. Thinking about it, it's 200k of normal roads so fuck it.. there's no point worrying too much about the cobbles.
I do need new gloves though.. the frickin gel has moved in my old Alturas.

Right, bought new gloves Endura FS260's with a good wedge of gel, i normally spend about £5 so these were a shock to the system. Have ordered some 25mm Conti's - already got some 24mm Grand Prix's but decided my fat arse and pave combo required something slightly wider. We'll see what happens - feels like a baptism of fire.

I used conti Grand Prix 4 seasons 28's at about 80psi, single layer of gel tape and assos mitts. Seemed to do the trick, no punctures and as comfortable as you could expect.
Oh and didn't drink any of the pink or green stuff at the feed stations.
Assos mitts on sale at Brixton cycles at the moment.

How much do you weigh, al? I'd struggle to get away with 80psi myself. I'm gonna wack in 100 and adjust down from there if necessary.

At the time a svelte 90kg.

Maybe should have whispered that.

al - what spares and food did you ride with?

Which Al is which?

Multi tool, 2 tubes puncture repair kit, mini pump, 4 gels 4 bars, 2 large bottles. Invested in a good saddle bag and new bottle cages before ride. The cobbles are strewn with bottles that have fallen off and you don't want to have to stop to collect, keeping the momentum up is key (probably be covered in cow shit anyway). Food is plentiful at the feeds I did buy a can of coke at a bar at one point adjacent to the last feed as I had an immense craving.
Had 2 bars left over.

Aren't Conti 28s more like 25s from other manufacturers? If so, even big-boned people could get away with running <80psi in 'normal' 28s.

Cheers for the information - pretty much what I've bought food wise. As for spares I've got 4 tubes, 4 CO2 inflator things (not used them before) a puncture kit, speed lever and multi-tool. Hope this suffices. Just dosed myself up with beetroot juice - now I like beetroot but... fuck it's horrible. Decanted 500ml into a bottle and the spillage looked like I'd been dismembering bodies in the kitchen!
Conti tyres are recommended apparently.
