    +1

  • Ok after last night,

Angelo is in as our primary pilot, Will is looking into a caravan and the new dates are somewhere between June 7-21. Looking at about 14 days (10 ish days riding, 2 days to drive back + a couple days for safety and ferry crossing allowance)

Also not listed for costs is the ferry ride which looks to be £15 from stormness to scrabster (northlink).

So far people who are in are:

    Will
    Harvey
    Eddie
    Angelo
    Hayden
...add your name here and find yourself a comfortable saddle...

I am working on a route on google maps, once I have something rough we can hash out the route better, look at any places wed like to see and figure out campsites etc..

    hee haaaww!

  • ...add your name here and find yourself a comfortable saddle...

yeah, after yesterday i realised my new carbon/ti saddle does loose its comfort even with padded shorts underneath jeans.
    may need a lovely brooks

70miles or so a day sounds douable, and i think after that just keep on pushing and see maybe we can get to 90a day. Thats only like 5hours of riding a day if you think about it.
What are the plans then, do we push in the morning/afternoon/evening?
When are there less cars on the road?

  • Push evening night, it's nicer then =)

  • There is a Womens' Institute in Ugley.....called suprisingly enough the Ugley Womens' Institute!

  • There is a Womens' Institute in Ugley.....called suprisingly enough the Ugley Womens' Institute!

:) totally, we gotta see the ugly womens' institute. Is there an ugley road to Ugley?

  • Ugley quite ok...near Elsenham...off the B1393.....Used to be lots of huts owned by east London cycling clubs for a time trial racing base...lots of time trials started from there......if you want to see really ugly women go to Braintree....sea monsters!

  • Biffa have a depot at Ugley on the B1383 just south of the turn off for Ugley.

One of the cycling clubs located at the Huts (on North Hall Road between Ugley and Elsenham) do a ride from Ugley to Nasty (in Herts, just north of Great Munden) and back.

There are a load of Audaxes starting at the Ugley club huts over the next 2 weekends. From 50km to 200km, all easily doable on fixed. Plus another 200 starting in Haslingfield on the 22nd which is a bit hillier. Go to www.audax.uk.net and look at the calendar.

A few Audaxes will also be good preperation if you're thinking of doing any long rides.

Cheers , will check it out .No one has done Ugly to Twatt though ? On Fixed ?

  • We can make our own little rides (as we'll need practice anyway). Possible ones

    Nasty - Yelling
    28mi

    Nasty - Duck End
    24mi

    Ugley - Willey
    90mi

No, nor on gears, but it's quite a specific ride.

I do know lots of people who've done various long fixed rides such as LEJOG/JOGLE, London->Edinburgh->London, Grand Triangle (London -> Cardiff -> Edinburgh -> London).

  • there were two dudes who went fixed, brakless around europe/asia back in '05

  • 14th/15th is a do er. i'll book it in my diary. have a basic route planned - basically we go NORTH from town, all the way to the Wash. Lots of camp sites there! 50 miles or so. Sign up if you fancy it...

Cambridge - The Wash, Overnight Cycle Ride, 14th/15th March

    1. Bogey
    2. ....
      etc

    is this still ON, boug?
will we be back in time for sunday polo, i really dont want to miss another week :)))

  • cor blimey time has flown by, completely forgot about this little one!

it is indeed on, i have the time booked off work. i will map out a route for us tonight, and an itinery of sorts.

we will be sharing the load of a tent, sleeping bags, cooking utensils and food. i hope you two (eddie and oliver) have pannier racks? mine will fit on my polo bike i don't mind using for the trip. if you don't have panniers, then we will have to consider using my tandem for the trip which is a load lugger of sorts, plus my pannier on one of your bikes. failing that, anyone got any ideas for luggage carrying? we could always b&b it up in some norfolk backward pub, i am sure they are plentiful, although this will be far more costly. i know you only have 20p eddie.

one question for you both, would either of you be able to set off midday on friday?

any more takers for this well planned trip into the fen?

you can tell i project manage for a living can't you?

  • failing all of that, a saturday long ride should be our back-up plan. i wouldn't mind a ~50 mile round jaunt of a trip, maybe visit Ugley for pre-mega ride stake out? the pub there (chequers) is rather good.

  • ....i know you only have 20p eddie...

    little update - 45p actually

but nah, im cool to set off midday on a friday. I have a pannier but i hate them so im just gonna stick what fits into a large backpack.

whats the plan then, cycle up there, sleep and come back or sumin?

  • i would suggest fitting the pannier, the back pack will hurt after 50 miles. plus we can carry more food and beer that way.

well an overnight ride usually consists of riding there, sleeping and riding back! we could go through the night and fuck the system, but i'd spoil my 23 year perfected body clock.

  • I'd suggest a Cambridge - The Wash - Ugley - Cambridge destination
at Ugley we can find some nice places to start the "real" race and investigate the area for pubs etc.

do we really need to sleep though? the whole thing is only like 50miles there and back, incl going through Ugley. Maybe just cycle there for a few drinks and cycle back later that night. It might be fecking freezin to hit the racks, worse if it starts raining.

  • are you related to Thatcher eddie?

sleep is one of my crutches, and to be deprived of it is to awaken the devil. why don't we set off early saturday morning, visit the wash for lunch, and cycle back to cambridge? that does away with excess baggage and i get to sleep at night.

  • plus the distance is more like 120 miles (camb to wash to camb) plus 40 miles (camb to ugley to camb).

    hmm

160 miles in a day? 16 hours cycling assuming we don't get lost

    my feet are getting cold!

lets just go to ugley and back ;) i know some stunning routes with some cracking climbs

  • et voila

good wee 50 miler round trip, in the sunshine, lovely jubbly

  • The A10 into Cambridge isn't the nicest route, if it were me I'd use the top end of this (Done this route about 20 times now):-

    http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/71351

So, from Ugley, head to Elmdon as you have planned but turn right down towards Ickleton, left to Duxford, cross the A505 (easy on bikes as there is a traffic island), up through Wittlesford, Little Shelford, Great Shelford.

Just after crossing the railway tracks in Gt Shelford there's a cyclepath on the left that takes you across the fields all the way to the back of Addenbrookes, much nicer than any of the roads into Cambridge. Funky DNA pattern painted on the surface too.
