  • Is there any way of telling if you've got Reynolds 531 tubing other than either knowing your shit really well or there being a sticker on the frame?

  • Littigator, nice moniker, do you want a list of tubings?

Just let me know, and my mate Fred will be right along.

    Fixed.

Can I have a list of tubings please GA2G? I was talking to Ondine last night about tubing and told him I didn't have a clue when it comes to Columbus tubing. What's good? What's shit? I know I could probably look on google but I like your lists. Makes my life that little bit easier. :)

  • Urine-procurer. :))

    meh.

GA2G's entire knowledge of tubing is here

  • ^ too funny

to the original question everything I know is in the above link. I've had to rely on the sticker on my bike.

  • Marvellous, thanks chaps, I've booked my tubing consultation and apparently, I'll be able to ride a stiffer gear ratio much easier at higher cadences for longer once my tubes have been properly cleared....wow it's amazing what you can achieve with an old frame...although I'm not looking forward to the sand-blasting much (ouch)

  • Hmmmm, interesting suggestion but I think the missus might be less than pleased if I suggested we do some 'homework' on the tubing of her bike!

  • if you know the make and year of the frame try googling it

by knowing the age, and where it was made helps.
it won't be a really heavy frame either, nor superlight.

I don't get the obsession with 531, it's old hat and not that special

crap. where did the term vintage lightweights came from. 531 is awesome tubing, my old holdsworth mistral from the 60's, was feather light even with chromed ends.

531 is double-butted (thick tubing at ends and thinner in the middle). if you tap your nail alongthe tubing it will change sounds in the middle, more tinnier.

    you are full of shit.

    hardly "awesome" is it..

it's not shit, granted, but there are better.

  • I always thought that 531 was always butted, but recetly find out that there is 531 tubing normal gauge.

  • 653 or 853 or lighter and thinner, but more fragile. 531 is a good comprimise. AWESOME!

  • reynolds 631
    deda sat14 eom16..

    various tange, various columbus..

    all better.

  • just face it, i'm right, you're wrong!

  • that seems unlikely

  • you've been into bikes for 5 mins and think you know it all.

531 is an old tubing, slightly better than plain gauge. nothing more.

  • fight!

  • reynolds 953 may be "awesome"

  • fight!

I need to start drinking again

  • But, but, but.. people on the internet have said 531 is some of the best tubing ever!
...so comfortable, lightweight, strong, beautiful, elegant, British, classic, coveted, unbettered, wonderful, springy, avec souplesse, tight, forgiving, resilient, responsive...
    How can you argue!

  • columbus neuron is also awesome

But I think sl/slx looks a bit nicer

  • Columbus should call their next tubing 'boner' or 'slex'
