Winter gloves

  • for 1h45min spent a nice afternoon in giro lx lf's, temp was between +1-2°c
was suprised actually how they held up, at times hands felt cold and then warm again. would've not count these as winter gloves but then again +1°c is not winter in finland. it's late spring.

ohyeah, would've taken the shot on snowy path but had slicks on today and had to concentrate on steering to much on those :(

  • I'm a bit too lazy to read through the last 15 pages or so, has there been a conclusion on what the best waterproof, warm, windproof glove that's bike friendly is?

  • Yep, page 67.

"Exclusive outdoor glove with Ergo Grip construction creating pre-curved fingers, minimal excess material, and seams positioned for optimal grip. Durable goat leather on the palm, upper section made of windproof, waterproof and breathable Gore Windstopper Breeze."

Should be warm and durable without sacrificing control, or being too bulky. From a company who only makes gloves. Lots of liner options:

"Merino Wool Liner Active" sounds about right.

  • 8 miles of stop start commute.

I've now starting to understanding fully how that felt, it's impossible to get my hand warmed up during a start/stop commute.

  • +1 for Hestra. I have their Windstopper Bike Tracker - perform very well and are well-made bits of kit. I use them with some merino ski glove liners when it's a bit colder (low single digits degrees, down to just below freezing) and they are just right for me.

  • My commute is similar - today I had craft siberian gloves with a l/s merino baselayer and a transfer jacket. Too hot! Will go back to PTJ tomorrow.

Tried these out under Gore Windstopper gloves, and they do help a bit, fingers were less cold. But I'm in the car today as it's under 0 with damp cold weather...windchill still an issue.

BTW in the category weird tips: Surgical gloves as liners. May try that, off to get another pair of gloves...

  • I wore sealskinz lobsters this morning on my road bike. The gloves are pretty big on me (they're a L and I'm a lady, albeit a lady with large hands) so I was unable to use any of the levers and nearly crashed into a van. My hands were warm though.

  • Bar-end shifters FTW!

  • Surgical gloves as liners.

Surely you'll just end up with wrinkled fingers, like you've sat in the bath too long?

  • One thing Hestra do very well is liners. With merino Defeets their polartec liner was fine for 4hrs in 2-3° on Sunday.

Surgical gloves do something but that's a bit desperate and sweaty.

Those leather palm gloves @ChrisMGS posted look amazing... for throwing snowballs.

  • Are the liners windproof?

I'd have thought the DeFeet would be better as a liner: doesn't wearing them over something open up the weave and make them a bit breezy?

  • No. They're thin, smooth Polartec but other materials like silk are great too. The important thing is they're liners. And thin.

No, the Defeets are a bit too thick and grippy to be good liners IMO.

My hands don't get sweaty with the merino Defeats so I wear them whenever I can if there's going to be some work done.

  • doesn't wearing them over something open up the weave and make them a bit breezy?

  • I'd have thought the DeFeet would be better as a liner: doesn't wearing them over something open up the weave and make them a bit breezy?

You'd think so, but it really kept my hand warm around 0 degrees yesterday.

  • Yeah it sounds pretty bizarre. No doubt as wind proof as a bin liner ;)

May make more sense to just take the fingers only to stop the STI metal leeching heat.

  • BTW you don't need surgical silicon gloves, just mechanics/petrol-station gloves as a wind/waterproof layer.

    It's a handy bodge.

  • I was looking into the Windstopper (Bike) Tracker for a while, but couldn't find them discounted (or really in stock) anywhere. There's one place online which has them, but only in fluro and full price. They do look great though.

Using these at the mo: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/gore-bike-wear-power-windstopper-softshell-gloves-1/

So I thought the Ergo Grips with leather etc might be a decent upgrade. Got some size 10's on order so I'll give some feedback later once I'm cycling again. Will probably pair with those Hestra Merino Active liners too. Planning a trip for the spring and want something nice to ride all day, and evenings, in.

No video reviews of that particular model, but found one bike-y photo of the black ones:

  • I have those Windstopper gloves. They're nice and thin, cut close around the fingers – good them on their own in spring and autumn.

  • What about wearing them on top?

    Windproofing without the wrinkling!

  • Nothing glamorous, but HH last night was freezing to -2 ° by the time I got home.
I double gloved these under these
which I picked up in uniqlo on some cheap offer just after Christmas. Inner gloves were a little damp after 3 hours, but hands were kept warm and the outer glove gripped the drops really well.

  • Double layering is the key for me! I came across an interesting discussion on a road.cc blog post here: http://road.cc/content/blog/140949-coldfinger-man-raynauds-touch

  • Got some Spada Eighty2 motorbike lobsters for £40; waterproof leather, Hipora lining with Primaloft and Thinsulate. They are very warm.

  • http://www.sealskinz.com/UK/extra-cold-winter-cycle-gloves got these (lucky in Evans cycles sale, my size still there) + http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371207819520?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Result it seems, I doubt my fingers ever will be super warm but no discomfort at all.
Now I just need a day with an ultra cold wind to really test them...
