Winter gloves

  • Cheers. I'll swing by snow and rock this afternoon and have a look at the Arcteryx offerings.

I did find a place in Holland that sells the sturmfists and ships internationally for peoples information.

  • Gunna double down on my recommendation for Arc'teryx glove liners. They are amazing.

  • Can vouch for Arc'teryx gloves. Amazing. But cash as fuck.

Beta AR are so good. But then I have to say that because I was stupid enough to spend that much on a pair of gloves...

  • £100+??? Fuck that.

  • Been waiting for Sturmfist to show up on UK sites. If I'm going to spend £70-£100 on a glove I want to either be able to try it on first or have the option to send it back without fannying on with international returns.

That and I'm hoping that if I hold out long enough for UK stocks, the winter will pass before I'm forced to spend and can delay the outlay until next winter. In the meantime it's numbness and pain in equal measures.

  • Yeah, but, they're for skiing. Haven't and probably won't use them on the bike.

  • strumfist are not waterproof though

  • Ah, well that's ok then :S :P

At least you're less likely to kill a pair crashing on snow, right?

  • From 45NRTH's site:

"For late fall and early spring riding conditions, there’s Sturmfist 5. A water and wind resistant Polartec Neoshell on the back of the hand meets a layer of water resistant Pittards goat leather on the palm to ensure the utmost protection against the elements."

"WATERPROOF-BREATHABLE MEMBRANE An ultra-thin sheet of microporous material behind our textile shells keeps you dry and warm in the harshest weather conditions. Liquid water molecules from outside of the garment are larger than vapor molecules created by body heat from the inside. The microscopic pores are smaller than liquid water molecules, but larger than vapor molecules. As a result, waterproof-breathable membranes stop liquid from the outside, but release vapor from the inside for thermal and moisture regulation. "

  • Ha - quite. They're wearing in very nicely though and are incredibly warm. Removable liner though which is the biggest advantage. The price of buying shit made out of Gore-Tex has never been cheap... especially when it's Arc'Teryx. I'm sorry.. I'm going to stop trying to justify the purchase now.

  • What hand size are you? If I order one (M), you are more than welcome and try them on / take them off me if they are the wrong size ;)

  • Ah, last news I read (a while ago) was MTB only.

Hm, in the USA...hai import fees.

My mum knows how to sew...perhaps I can bribe her ;)

  • Given the need for space in a glove to allow circulation and some insulating air, I'd be after the biggest they do. I'm XL usually in a fingered glove, but L in fingerless. Thanks for the offer though.

  • Just bought some Spesh Element 2.0 gloves, on sale at Cycle Surgery.

  • I have those. Nice, but not as nice as the lost Assos Early Winters I bought them to replace.

  • Now I feel emasculated.

  • what's this miraculous membrane ?
in the world of outdoor clothing, water resistant means water resistant, not proof. if you use goretex or similar, you can print waterproof

  • Bought some of these yesterday:

    they feel nice.

  • Went and had a look at the Arcteryx offerings. Very nice indeed. Sadly sub £100 gloves that looked up to the task were too bulky for cycling imo. The Beta AR would be perfect, but at £170, no thank you.

Going to order the sturmfist, screw it.

  • I have the leather the version, short cuffs, but been doing me proud in recent temps.

  • So, the discounted Specialized Element 2.0 gloves were out for 5 hours today and are full of win. My arms were colder than my fingers which meant they were working wonderfully. Little bit fiddly doing stuff with a semi-lobster and more filling than my other gloves but that's to be expected. Would bang.

  • I find that non cycle specific gloves are much, much better at keeping you warm. I used to just wear M&S leather gloves. They would fall apart after a couple of years but I was never cold. Then I moved to merino inners and either Grip Grab things or SealSkinz winter gloves and neither combination is as good as a cheapo pair of thinsulate winter general purpose gloves. See also bike lights/torches.

  • Craft lobsters, accept no substitute.

  • Can confirm that the Giro day glo monsters I posted up there are actually pretty good. Possibly should have gone down a size, but they're quite snug over the fingers so was worried about them squeezing any warm air out.

Jealous of your leather ones @biarittz ... Bon velo only had these ones or some primaloft giros in stock.

  • Going to try a Merino liner with my Gore Windstopper gloves...

...failing that, a perhaps a trip to TKMAXX as they often have discount ski stuff. It can be purple with fluoro yellow flowers on it for all I care, as long as it works.
