  • Since RIH makes the most beautiful track bikes in the world we don't need more haha,
but its actually a pretty shame, it just has to do with the general popularity of track riding.
Doesn't koga also build on order? More new-style kinda bikes anyhow. (fugly imo)
People should start riding RIH again! Shame RIH will prob stop once the guy retires..

  • Thats really disappointing, and almost unbelievable. The Netherlands is the greatest of european cycling nations (population-wise), yet Its the UK and Italy that have the much stronger frame-making institutions (though many are a cottage industry).

I was hoping to re-visit Rotterdam, and have a look around for track frame makers. Sadly, its not many.

I really wonder why this is..........

That's quite simple: Holland is a road riding nation, not a track riding one. We have got several good frame builders: Duell, Braun, Koga, Van Tuijl etc., but track frames are just not that much in demand.

  • I live in rotterdam and on friday nights we can be found on 'plein 1940' where we practice tricks and stuff

i'll definitely hit it up when i arrive (august)

thanks for the insight everyone else

  • I think, just for the cycling culture, the Netherlands is one of my favourite places.

  • I'm booked up to go to amsterdam 29th April - 5th May and can wait.

Queens Day the best party of the year.

I certainly wont be riding fixed, I'll be cruising round on a dutch town bike or chugging around on a boat.

  • I'm riding over with 2 friends for Queensday - getting the ferry to hoek van holland on the 29th in the evening and arriving in the morning - reckon 2 and a bit hours to amsterdam, arrive there at about 10:30 when the party gets going! Hup holland huppie! Anyone who wants to join us for ferry piss up and group ride over to the 'Dam is more than welcome!

that was a fun read and pretty accurate

    cant fucking wait!

Fortunately, yes, after numerous accidents and people making complete idiots of themselves. Sorry if I sound rude or unwelcoming, but if you want to come over for the dope and the alcohol, do stay away. We've seen more than enough foreigners coming over just to get drunk and stoned.

    Hook - Harwich
    Rotterdam - Hull
    IJmuiden - Newcastle

Whether you go to R'dam or A'dam doesn't make a difference to me, it's far, far away from where I am anyway. And tourism does make up a lot of the economy there, absolutely, and it's not that I want the brits to stay away, far from it. It's just that drug-tourism causes a lot of problems and tourism is not the same as getting doped up and drunk, imo. People who come over just for the dope and the booze are the ones who often cause trouble and spoil it for the 'ordinary' tourists. So I would much prefer it (as would quite a large part of the Dutch, I think) if all the people (not just the Brits) who come over for the drugs just stay home and get stoned there.

fair enough, but why get stoned here when you can get stoned in the cannabis capital of the world. anyway what makes you think im a trouble maker? i plan on getting very stoned then walking around not making any trouble go to a club then go back to my hotel.

if you dont want tourists coming over to get stoned then dont allow people to buy weed at a coffee shop simple as.

well in amsterdam it kind of is

  • People that don't make it out of central Amsterdam (Dam sq+red light district) are the equivalent of tourists who don't make it out of Liecester Sq n Covent Garden.

Having said that I happy for them to stay in these places as it means I can have a more enjoyable time exploring what both cities have to offer.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they do not know any better...

    ignorance is bliss

  • ignorance is bliss

    You're so right. :D

  • yeah i was wondering what rotterdam was like, we were thinking about stopping there for the night or maybe an extra day. can you buy/smoke weed there?

i am a drug/purveyour of salacious entertainment tourist, but i want to cycle there so i can see the country too. a mate was telling me about a place caled Harleem (not sure on spelling) that is supposed to be excellent. anyone been there?

this will be my 9th visit to amsterdam, but the fist time ive cycled there.

  • Spelt Haarlem

It's an excellent place, well worth a visit. Like a small version of Amsterdam. And an easy and fun cycle from Amsterdam and back.

  • Werd^ good ride!

Normally i don't have any problem with brit tourist in Amsterdam,
it's just for the fact that they never pay attentions crossing roads
and such witch isn't that much fun in the tight alleys. Makes riding
    the center pretty hectic somedays.
