Jammy: (if you fancied trying some full length ones and need fixings) you might find useful the stays for Salmon mudguards that Francis Thurmer sells here http://www.cyclesplus.co.uk/ . You need to phone him he's a proper luddite. They have a single piece of steel wire that wraps around the back of the guard, through a draw bolt held by a flat nut underneath a 5mm ish hole in the guard.

Interesting - made out of pre-formed mouldings.

funny you should mention that - wouldn't recommend old broom handles

ha - NO. They'd need laminations to make 'em strong enough.

OOOh! I like. A LOT! Yep that pre formed inner curve is good. Next time maybe sand off some of that square edge on the other side?
Fixings: I have a feeling you might do well to buy all the other parts from him but not the actual steel wire, as the bends are pre-formed so the width might be too small for your guard (the salmons are only 22mm wide!) Then get straight steel wire and bend it where you want it yourself, presumably more like 30mm.
Time to get the funky woodstain colours going.

Just been having a google. Lots of folk make 'em it seems - quite expensive some of them.
I don't like the look of full length ones with all that messy hardware - it there really a need? I've never used mudguards myself so I've no idea...
Surely something light, short, and easily mountable like dante's would be more than adequate? -

you still get a wet clacker with the really short ones.

I think the whole hardware chic thing is an acquired taste.

So are wet clackers.

that's fresh off the press - still need to cut down and form a bit by hand and i will look at rounding off that edge a bit fo sur

Yep I thought as much. No I meant do it before you set the bend, much easier to get it even while its still flat. ;)
Great work man. I ffing love it!

If I were to make something, what points should I aim for it to cover the tyre to/from?
seattube > 2 o'clock? -

Rear: 8.30 o'clock to mudguard bridge (3.30 ish) - i.e. just more than a full semicircle
Front: 7 o'clock to 12 or 1 - about 6 or 7 inches in front of the fork max. - about a third of a circle. Well nearly half.
I don't do burdens.
I might do mudguards if I have the time though...
