What, dungaree wearing lesbians?
As long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses...

What is the Australian helmet law ? I thought they decided to not legislate mandatory use ??
been compulsory for long time. You will get $AUS50 ticket by cops in about 30 mins if not.drivers are worse in aus though :o

Like they get any...
What, they do?
;-(I am quite confident that Birkenstocks reduce if not remove the desire to reproduce. Sadly they also appear to create a great urge to go out and buy a baby. Sterilisation is unnecessary and will not solve the problem.

MOT Fail.

Bicycle MOTs would surely be unbelievably difficult to enforce.
With a new car you get 3 years till the MOT is needed but is this not because cars are assembled in a strictly controlled and quality sampled factory environment. They are not assembled by a work experience kid at the local halfords (or worse - asda/tesco etc) who puts the forks on the wrong way round and doesn't know a headset press from an allen key.
I'd reckon that within 3 years a very high percentage of bikes have been discarded/replaced. Especially kids bikes.
As for riders like ourselves it'd be a doddle to circumvent the system. When it comes time to MOT my motorbike (Royal Enfield) i will have to reattach indicators and mirrors, change the exhaust back to the standard one, possibly rejet the carb to get the emissions down, swap my silver and black number plate for a standard yellow one. It'll take about a days work to get it ready for MOT and then another day after to put it back and il do this every year. How long will it take to slap a couple reflectors and a brake or 2 onto a track bike? -

despite being an advocate of proper cycle training, the novice riders rarely put anyone else in serious danger, so I don't think, at this stage, that anything should be compulsory.
For their own safety there are ways of improving skills and awareness which are either free or of little cost.
I would only think compulsory training would be acceptable if road law, and the enforcement of it, had a radical re-structure.
to use a blatant example: cycle feeder lanes, ASLs and associated problems.
why force people into using a road infrastructure in a way that's unsafe and likely to put them in mortal danger?Ponder this:
when motorists break common road laws, the risk of danger increases, that's why we have speed limits and rules about paying attention.when cyclists break common road laws, it's often to reduce risk (to get into a safe position away from traffic etc)
Nobody's perfect, and we all make mistakes and sometimes do naughty things, but to impose any kind of mandatory regulation at this stage would be an act of incredible stupidity.

Wonderful. Each bike has to be licensed and road tested. Police will be able to stop and search for certificates. Each rider will have to be tested and licensed and no doubt will be subject to continuing education. Learner riders will have to ride second seat on tandems. Children will only be able to ride if wrapped in bubblewrap. Nonce checking for those riding smaller frames. DNA testing for BMX riders. Brompton Riders will be placed on the Sexual Offenders Register.
Come to think of it, that last point does make sense.

yeah, after all, cyclists are only the next one up from paedophile.

Wouldn't that invalidate your insurance?
i would have thought that having an MOT done would be crucial to VALIDATING my insurance? changing the bike back after might have insurance implications but as most of the mods are aesthetical rather than performance enhancing i'm not worrying too much. neiter are the 99% of the other bikers i know who do the same thing.

It was always coming......
They'll have trackers in new bikes faster than you can say singulator! -

Dunno what they've done in the last 3 years but when I was there, helmets were required by law. You were fined if caught riding without one.

I did my cycling proficiency test when I was about 8 too. Had a Coventry Eagle BMX With blue tyres and pads. Pulled up to the testing area, showing off, pulled an endo, overcooked it, went straight over the bars, passed the test with flying colours! Easy!
What, dungaree wearing lesbians? Bloody liberals, my granddad would be dancing on his grave if only he knew
