Did you fall off the first time you tried clipless pedals?

  • you fucking idiot

  • Trying some for the first time this weekend. I'll let you know!!

One weekend late (stuck pedal syndrome).
    Happy to report NO!
    But doesn't mean it won't happen ;)

  • oh god yes - like about twenty times - right in front of a policeman - or a gorgeous girl - or a gang of pointing giggling Japanese tourists - I once fell off clipped in infront of about 5,000 people waiting for a firework display - I think they thought I was part of the show

  • Used to have all sorts of problems with SPDs, they would either fail to release causing slo-mo side fall action or I would slacken them off to avoid this leading to involuntary release and totally screw up the climb I was attempting to tackle.

Switch to egg-beaters solved the problem.

I used to use spds on MTB but switching back to platforms proved that they screwed up my confidence and I'm happier tackling technical stuff without them.

  • So I'm about to go clipless.

Any recomendations for a good double sided pedal and shoes?

Use the search function, lots of threads on this. Also depends a lot on your budget.
Many, many, many (this Forum is positively riddled with them) people favour Sidi Dominators and Time Atacs.

Also depends if you are happy with racing cycle shoes or want more freedom (and power to actually walk/stand) and then use MTB shoes.

I have Dominators and Speedplay Frogs. Nothing to compare to but am happy with both.

    Good hunting!

  • I fell off on my cages before i got clipless, and thats becouse I used to tighten up the straps on my shoes once on the bike to get the feel of that direct transmission of my leg-power to the pedals :p

  • first time last night. Absolutely errors by the book. Ride around a bit, think this is alright.. do a skid, tensions too low so front foot pops out!! Spinning, out of control crank (and me!) Followed a little while by a stop... start to move side ways and put foot down in normal manner... oh.. oh no.. clipped in I remember now... splat!

Was really good on the ride in today though. It gives more confidence in control, and is so different to riding in my beat up plimsolls which have holes in the soles (the bit rhymed - unintentional), cos they've worn so thin!!

  • How many couriers use clipless???
    I don't.

  • The majority of the ones I saw in london were using them, with sidi shoes

  • I fell off the first time I used clips... at 0mph at a traffic light.

But when I tried clipless, I was fine. Leant up against a wall before moving off the first time to make sure I knew how to get out of the pedals, and once I was comfortable with that I rode off and haven't fallen off because of pedals since.

  • i used clipless and sidis messengering.

  • He'd give people lumps of cooked meat to try and then ask them "one was pork, the other human, can you tell the difference?"

They're very similar but human flesh isn't quite as pale as pork and is slightly sweeter, goes well with sage and garlic.

  • i need some biltong now

  • ha ha ha, first time i used clips on the road, completely forgot i had them on(testiment to their comfort i guess) pulled up to get off and just fell sideways, splat!!! bet it looked funny to all the onlookers. have learnt from my mistakes though and have not done it since.

  • Have story about friend of mine who had straps for ages. Then he moved to clipless and on first junction when he stoped on red lights he pulled his leg backwards and of course that did not do anything with SPDs. He then felt sideways just in front of the bus. The driver could not stop laughing as he had no idea, what clipless pedals are.

  • couriers love sidis.

  • Fell over (not really off) today when I got to my mates house.. Unclipped one foot and just put slightly too much weight on my other and fell to that side.. The most annoying thing was I knew what was happening and was trying to unclip but as soon as I hit the floor out popped my foot!

  • Seriously guys, and girls, vegans piss me off, and I used to be vegan, and it made no difference to my cycling perforumance, but I quit being vegan, partly because vegans piss me off so much, and I don't want to be 'one of them', but also because cheese sandwhiches are a convenient form of carbs and protein*** even though I dont even like cheese.***

Thats got to be worse than falling over with your feet still attached. Bloody vegans. There is no way i can take you seriously now.

  • Oh no :(

  • Not the first time but third time yes. Was stopping and too much weight on the other side. Didn't really "know" how to unclip the right foot fast :P

  • Three months into spd... fell off at a roundabout - caught out by a driver changing his mind at the last minute :-( Landed on the wheel of my mate's bike and broke my hand. Wedding ring had to be cut off as hand swelled up so much and lower arm in plaster for 6 weeks.

Got the hang of them now!

  • right. just took my new sidi/time atacs out for their inaugural ride tonight. well impressed. but kind of wanting these heating insoles for them now...

  • it took 10minutes. stood up to go up a hill, left foot wasnt clipped in properly, foot hit the floor.

1 month later, the 5stitches in my chin are out, but my left kneecap is still cracked and i havnt been back on a bike.... :'(
