  • Re: page 15, I think you'd have to be mental to put a Shamal on a gas pipe Peugeot. Sell the wheel and get a Peugeot 653 or 753 frame.

Carbolite 103 was never a gaspipe, it's a high tensile frame used on most of Peugeots standard bikes until being superceded by the HLE frame in the late 80's. Yes it is a little heavier but the actual ride quality was pretty good and it provided a strength and flexibility that many more expensive frames did not.

  • Hi,

Sorry to resurrect an oldish thread, but I was looking at my frame today, and realised my seat tube decal is different to the other frames. Does any one know why this is?

  • Ignore last question - I am being daft!

  • Hey all,

I was wondering if it was worth chucking gears onto my pug? I have a 105 gearset kicking about my garage, don't know whether this would be better than having it as it is? Thoughts...

  • Hi all,

love to see so many Peugeot Fans, so i though i can post my one, too.

    i got it second hand:

and then i have changed some parts

  • Either your fork or your headtube is fucked mate.

  • It was involved in a head-on crash, basically the bike's fucked.

  • where can you see that?

  • Headtube is a lots steeper, and fork bend back a bit, not recommend riding it until you get the frame and fork replaced.

Look at the mudguard in the first picture, it's nearly touching the downtube.

  • which is on the point of view I think. it is a 600mm frame and i think it looks like the other peugeot's here in the thread, but i am not a pro so i am a little bit afraid and will check this by the bicycle shop.

  • I'm sorry dude, but the frames really is fucked.

Nothing you can do short of either paying a costly repair, or replacing the frames.

  • Hi guys, I found an old one in my parents garage. Have just switched it to as using a cheapo chinois fixie. This thread has been very helpful.

It rides OK, but creaks loadly every half turn - even more so when uphill.

Reading about, it often sounds like the bb - but there is a bit of play in the right crank so I think that might be it.

Would it be best to change the bb and crank? If so could I do that? Where would be the best place in London to take it if not.

    Thanks

  • second attempt, last one disappeared...

I am not especially qualified to help with this (I am not a bike mechanic), but it isn't very difficult and I have changed cranksets and bottom brackets many times.

    1) try pedalling standing up, it may be the saddle/seatpost, you'd be surprised.

    2) you can do it yourself, but you will need some bike specific tools. Read Sheldon Brown's website and here and look at youtube. IF you think you're likely to want to keep maintaining it yourself, maybe buy a small bike tool kit. You will need a crank extractor and a bottom bracket tool. It could be that the bottom bracket is loose in the frame and needs tightening. It could be that the crank is loose on the bottom bracket and needs tightening. [It looks like it is a square taper bottom bracket and crankset - Sheldon can explain] If it is the latter and you've left it too long you may never get it tight enough as the square taper hole in the crank will have got too big.

You may get away with just tightening it.
You may need to replace only the cranks, or only one crank.
You could do the most comprehensive job and buy a new crankset and a new, sealed bottom bracket and learn to do it all.

write down any ID numbers etc that are on any parts you remove!

  • PS your chain is slack

  • Thanks for the help, it does still creak when out the saddle.

I think I'll give it a crack and delve into Sheldon's site

  • I'm looking for some step down washers to mount mudguards to my wife's pug mixte.
Being awkward and French the fork and frame brazeons aren't threaded M5 but a larger, untapped hole.
I presume this is a common occurrence on older non-standardised frames and somewhere some natty little washers can be found?

  • Bolt, washer and nuts is the old way of doing it, Clerkenwell Screws?

  • Yeah I knew washers was an option but hoped there was a more elegant solution, like a t-nut or top hat but that's m5 internal and whatever on the outside. Might be able to find a sleeve washer.
Don't like the thought of spending ££ on nice 'guards for her then having to use a bodge to mount them.

  • Its great to see so much love for pugs, and since this post has been very helpful for me (and many others) I thought, why not showing some love posting my build, thoughts?...
