  • I'm got 27" x 1 1/4" wheels on my bike.

These badboys on ebay seem to suggest that they're 1", but will fit 1 1/4" - any advice on whether this is true / a good idea??

  • no.

  • I have a low pro front tyre is Continental Grand prix 25x559
I bought a Cont Gaterskin 28x559 impossible to get on I think 25x559 has been discontinued in the continental.

can anyone recommend another model I'm struggling

    Any help very much appreciated

  • Try harder, you should be able to get a 28c on, it may not seat properly but you should be able to get it on.
Also did this really need a new thread?

  • ignore it then why answer??

  • You asked the fucking question. Next time use the search.

Just trying to be helpful, have a neg for not using logic.

  • Next time use the search.

Why use the search when he can use the mearch?

  • That's pretty poor, especially for you Oli. Go to jail, do not collect £200.

  • It must be all over the Internet by now that there's such an awesome free service on here that automatically slots stupid questions into the right threads.

  • I had a puncture on the rear wheel of my Charge Plug about 3 weeks ago and I took it to Cycle Surgery and they fitted a new tube and tyre - a 700x28 Armadillo.

This week I had a puncture on the front tyre but as I wasn't in town I just went to the same Cycle Surgery and asked for the same tyre and tube and I would replace the tyre myself. I got home and after some struggle (never changed a tyre before) I got the new tyre on. But it looked a bit different to the rear tyre and now I see that they gave me a 700x23 for the front, but they fitted 700x28 on the back.

Is this a problem? Should they both be the same size? Is there a risk of riding a 23 tyre when the original is a 28?

I live in SE London and have to ride up and over Crystal Palace/Sydenham hills, which means I hit 30+ MPH on the down side and the last thing I want is a tyre ripping off at those speeds.

    Can someone please advise?

I have a second bike I can use tomorrow so won't be using the Charge until I am 100% it is safe.

  • Not having the same tyre size front and back is perfectly fine, you shouldn't have any problems. The only downside to having a 23c tyre if you previously had a 28c is that you will probably have a slightly less comfortable ride but thats about it.

Thanks mate - much appreciated. I wasn't sure if rim sizes differed somehow ... I will be having words with Cycle Surgery though to ask why they gave me different sizes!

  • It really doesn't matter what size tyres your running as long as they're properly fitted and they're the right sort of tyre (i.e. you're not trying to run tubs with tubes or something daft like that). I run 23c on the front of my bike and 25c on the rear (they aren't even the same brand of tyre) and I know many people that do similar. All that matters is that your tyres are properly seated on the rim and that they are adequately inflated.

  • The width of your tyres does matter - it's possible to have too wide or too narrow a tyre for a particular rim. It's not recommended to put a narrow 23/20c tyre on a wide touring/city rim e.g. Mavic A719/Rigida Grizzly, because it'll come unseated or bottom out easily. Similarly you wouldn't want to put a wide 35c tyre on a narrow road/race rim, because it'll roll off whilst cornering, or the pressure will split the rim apart.

Having said that, a Charge Plug on its original wheelset will be fine with a 23c tyre.

  • 23mm on A719 is fine, not sure about the Grizzly.

  • dredging up an old thread - Purchasing a charge scissor v3 frame. Would like to get some fat tyres on it (42-48c) but have only ever had experience with 23-25c. I'm potentially buying a wheelset with some Velocity Aerohead 32h rims on. Is there a limit as to what size tyre I can fit on certain rims?

  • Do not do this.

It can work, but really poorly.

  • Right. Glad I checked!

Max tyre size you'd reccomend for these particular rims?

  • 28 max, 32 would be pushing it.

  • Yes, it'll slow you down, Tnx.

  • 25mm front and rear

  • You can ride with 20mm, just far from idea.

Get extra link and run 25mm, the pro's choice.

  • Do it.
