Hi All,
First day back commuting today after the ice and i hit a large pothole which has ruined my brand new PX rear wheel rim and put my front wheel out of true.
Not much i could have done in the situation, car on the right of me and nowhere to go...
Ive heard of drivers claiming for new wheels from the local councils after potholes have destroyed their wheels, but where do us cyclists stand? I have a spare wheel so am using this in the meantime, but 50 miles out of a brand new wheel and now its FUBAR; im pretty pissed off.
You stand in the exact same position as a car driver whose car has been damaged by a defective road surface.
Take a photo of the offending pothole (with a tape measure pictured to show the depth) and your damaged wheel and contact the Highways Department of your local authority with full details of the circumstances.
Chances are the hole will then be filled in within less than 24 hours of your notification, so keep copies of your evidence... -

check on www.fillthathole.org.uk to see if it's already been reported. if so they can't claim they didn't know about it.

There's been some recent discussion of it here:

Given the recent weather and it's well publishised effects on the roads, I don't think you can really blame the councils for not having surveyed and repaired every pot hole caused by the freezing/thawing cycles from the snow. While on the whole (no pun...) councils are shit over such matters, sometimes things are just accidents. Just my opinion; I hate the current blame/claim culture, it detracts form the situations where there really is a fault and a case to answer to.
Sorry about your wheel though.

PS. Sorry for your wheels.

Agreed, it's a shit situation but is kind of acceptable given the recent weather.

After snow has fallen and melted away there always seems to be more holes in the road.
Is it just because of freeze-thaw action?
-
• #60
yeah, water gets into any gaps in the road, freezes and expands, then when it melts it leaves voids. car drives over and the voids collapse leaving a dip.

It's made a right old mess of Kingsland Road and I didn't even get to make snow angels :@

Fantastic work guys. I could have just-fucking-googled-it but thought it'd be a nice addition to the forum, fill the hole as it were (ba-dum-tish).

Pretty annoying, there's potholes on my route that I didn't even know exist!
Best to put on the 35c tyres for now.

Will not leaning help?

Don't they teach you this shit in architect's school, SP?

I am still on 28s. Quite nice comfort-wise.

Good point. They did actually but in reference to roads as far as I can remember. I think freeze-thaw was covered in A-Level geography as well. I was just wondering if there is more to it than that and if it can be avoided or 'designed for'.

I have a HOLE lot of questions to ask about potholes, maybe someone could FILL ME IN?
-
• #72
^fucking genius
-

It will depend on the surface but freeze-thaw takes down mountains eventually so unless you can out-design a mountain then you're screwed.
Head's up riding is the answer and don't forget to lean.
