meh... how scrappy does your frame look? i've never had a problem with headsets unless the frame is really uneven and poo. and i've had the same king in one of my mtbs since 2002 that was before people in lbs's knew what facing meant

brand new frame and it's pretty tidy, but it tight. Got the frame from Brick Lane Bikes, who told me to come back in with the CK and they'd do it for me, went there tonight and they don't even have the right tools! Grrrr. The guy there was reluctant to just press it in, and said it'd void the warranty if not faced.

fair play.. if its a new frame and its not an easy in, maybe you should do it properly.
sure you'll find somewhere, most shops should be able to sort it...try mosquito bikes or condor? (not from london so only know the posh shops!)

If you can get to a cycle surgery - they'll sort it...

moose cycles.
the area of contact on a king is very small and quite a shallow angle, hold the race and bottom bearing cup together in your hands and notice how easy it is to move them side to side.
this will show why they should be faced.
when fitted to the bike have a look how narrow the gap is between top cap and race, any change in angle between top and bottom cups will be seen by the change in this gap, a small offset will meant the top cap rubbing and premature bearing wear. -

If you're in a rush then you'll be out of luck with Condor or Mosquito as they are booked up weeks in advance most of the time.
I've used the London Bicycle Repair shop off The Cut near Southwark tube for similar work before and they did it the same day. Recommended.

Ant, I only went there after reading all the threads about them and being prepared for the worst, actually got very good service on a Saturday and was impressed, they said "Chris King, no problem, just bring it back and it'll be done in 15 mins!"
Got there tonight and the tool they nee is 'on order' and wont be here for at least a week!! Even called them this morning to check it was all ok! F**King annoying!(Only using a lump of 2 x 4 and a hammer if I get really annoyed with it! ;)

I think hitting shop staff with wood or a hammer is illegal.
FWIW I 'installed' mine with no tools.
-
• #15
How?? (not the hitting staff part!)
-
• #16
Not a way I would recommend :)
-
• #17
Ok, I'll stick with the 'correct' way and use some tools. I'm intreagued tho, fess up!

it's luck if your head tube is finished parallel..
if it is, you may be ok. if it's not: pain.
not worth risking a new chris bling h/set
(mine was an old,old s/h job, pressed into a new frame which happened to be ok) as Smithy says, the tolerances are VERY tight

Chris Bling! haha, ok so I got a posh headset and now everyone knows about it! ;)
Looks pretty good, I'll have a closer look and see.
