  • i'm definately in the market for grippy tires...

  • Halo Courier Berlin. And you will never look back.

are these grippy? i've heard bad things about the regular halo courier, thought about these for the protection you rate, but concerned about the grip?

  • My rubino slicks scare the shit out of my in the wet. Really need some new tyres but can't be bothered to change them.

  • 700 x 24 or 700 x 29.

    I use the 700 x 24 and I've never used a better all-purpose commuting tyre.

@velo_libre. They're very grippy, but not on cold hard metal....like the edges of manholes covers - it skips off.
There is a wearing in period as well, of about a couple of weeks, till the shape becomes less 'tall', and more round.

As far as I know, this is also the most puncture resistant tyre available in regular retail. Yes, better than Marathon Plus (IMO).

  • I've recently been using the Contitoria GatorRefuse Halodillos and they have been excellent in both dry, wet and dry and wet conditions. I have done somewhere approaching twenty yards on them with only 2 punctures and the bike has only slid away from me once; though I was leaning at the time.

  • dillos.......... It could only be Will.

Did the auto-spellcheck fail you again?

  • +1 on the Maxxis refuse. I've been running them since July 2009 and the only puncture I've had was when the water got in through the eyelets in my open pros and made the patch fall off my front tube!

Super grippy too. But of course the real trick is don't lean.

  • Following Ed's advice I took my so-called bicycle tyres off and replaced them with tractor tyres. Not had a puncture since and this summer I sold my wheat to Condor. Win win.

  • I need some tyres which prevent aquaplaning..

  • Well, you're in luck there because, following Ed's advice, I wrapped my tyres in old bath sponges (you can usually pick them up for free from the YMCA) and it works a treat. Aquaplaning is a thing of the past for me and, as a bonus, I have made quite a few new gentlemen friends down at the Y.

  • another here for Maxxis.. Have used them a bit on country roads and haven't had any problems so far*

    *touch wood

  • just don't skid on Refuse's, they fall apart.

  • Indeed, Rando's are slidey slidey slidey in the wet.

As Max doesn't ride the streets of London in the wet, is probably why he thinks they're gruppy (NZ).

    ;)

  • I noticed Ribble have started stocking Challenge tyres. They do some nice CX tyres in 32mm, which I may look at for the spring.

Some of these could make decent winter tyres (ie. the ones over 300g).

  • I quite like the specialized cross tyres, they come in a 32 (I think) but they have a nice shallow mid section in comparison to the grippy heavy tread at the sides.

I also like the Ritchey cross tyres for the same reason, but they aren't as shallow in the middle as the sbc. Also, you can pick up the SBC ones pretty cheap from nearly anywhere that sells the tri-crosss, most people who buy it get the shop to change the tyres.

  • Yesterday - black ice - conti shittyres - no grip - a touch of* lean* - now i ache all over.

    Be vigiliant. No leaning.

I have a pair of richeys CX tyres. Nice tyres, but very tall for their size.

2 days ago - black ice - Rubino Pro slicks - no grip - massive lean at 28mph - now I ache all down my left side and have a whiplash type ache in my neck.

On the plus side, the smooth icy ground meant I lost very little skin in the long, long slide.

  • 25c rubino pros for winter road bike, 35c conti cyclo x speeds for commuting cross bike (vittoria xm pros are nicer, but a bit pricey to trash on the road)

  • I have a pair of richeys CX tyres. Nice tyres, but very tall for their size.

They have next to no puncture protection though. I binned mine, rode 4 races with them and punctured in all of them.

I mainly only use them off-road anyway. Very flexible sidewalls and soft rubber tread, which works well on exposed rock.

At least the clearance issue, keeps me from commuting in them too much.

  • My Nordic spikes roll so badly that I have adjusted my brake calipers several times thinking I was riding with a brake pad or two rubbing my rim.

    Fecking great grip though.

  • Where I live it's quite hilly and my winter tyres are far to wide and slow rolling I am using some 32's at the moment on my cross bike so I need something a bit moe fast rolling but safe in the damp conditions.
    Cheers

    File tread cross tyres?

  • I have been riding the same Maxxis refuse on the front for the past two years. One puncture and it was a big tack which I dont think anything would have stopped...

  • these are in sale on CRC
