Please forgive me if this has been discussed earlier, but does running wide tyres on road rims rated for narrower tyres present any safety issues?

EDIT: Cheers Clefty for the demonstration!! Great job, again.
Jaygee, I'll take a stab at that.
From what I've read, it seems that folks have used very wide tyres on rims designed for much narrower fare. But, tube size is important,
depending on the maximum size of tyre you wish to put on, as will be the tyre pressure.Mostly, its safe, as long as not going from say, a 700x21 -> 700x47. That would fail.
But a move up from a 700x23 -> 700x30 should be fine. -

most people run at 25-28c tyres anyhow, so 30c isn't that much of a jump.
that's great to know, unfortuantely the snow seemed to be clearing up already!

ah I dont mind, I'll run it until the thaw, plus it means I am prepared for next time. I might even be able to fit one on the front - but need to give it a try.
On another note I have a Ritchey Speedmax 32c hardly used for a fiver if anyone wants it

The fount of knowledge has a nice page on tyre sizing and rim safety margins.

Using the Tire Sizing chart based on rim ridth... I'm good for 40mm to 50mm. I'm not good for anything less... but yet I'm happily running 25mm. Maybe I should be thinking of fatter tyres!

For poor conditions, I would have put it on the front to start with, personally. Although for good road conditions I run a slightly wider tyre on the back instead.
Tyres is personal though, so whatever works.

I've got fuck all clearance on the front, 25c max, so unfortunately it's not really an option - otherwise I would have a pair!

Worth noting that the width in the chat is internal, yet manufactures often quote extern width.

650c with thick tyres.
but then again, not worth it when the weather will clear up soon.

agreed, totally not worth it - tbf I rode the maxxis refuse during last Feb's biblical snow and was fine - if very scared. I just need to HTFU. Most roads are fine now, I just have to remember not to take my usual cut throughs as they are still icy as fuck.
Main roads FTW. -
• #165
exactly, ride as normal on the straights but never turn off a main road at speed at the moment. N16 is fucked.
-
• #166
I remember that route, you were being very careful when trying to negotiate the stranded traffic a couple weeks back before Christmas, while I was being reckless speeding toward the traffic light.
I think the main thing is that we're not quite used to snowy condition like the people in Copenhagen, However if it snow more regularly here, I've no doubt that you'll be perfectly confident riding with skinny tyres on a snowy day.

Clefty, let us know how that Schwalbe is working out for you.....thats if you've still got it in?
Today's sudden snow was really rapid!

my spesh armadillo nimbi which i fitted last saturday felt good in the snow today. 700x28s @ about 80psi. previously i was on 700x23 gatorskins @ 120 psi which were far less confidence inspiring in the slippy stuff.

Bumpity bump bump bump.
Light snow in London so far, but never reported in any weather forecast I saw yesterday.
Oh, wasn't last year's big snow in February? Maybe not necessarily out of the woods yet then..........
-
• #171
Um.. why?
-
• #172
'cos it's nearly spring.............
-
• #173
Um.. why?
Because it can't hurt to own more than one type of tyre......oh yeah, and its handy for snow.

Weirwolf 29 x 2.55s ftw!
We have clearance Clarence! Pretty easy to get on hipster rims as well.
