  • I'm moving to Surrey. USB sockets have not been installed in the country or urban roads near me.

Ha, touché. I meant at home and at work!

Is 200 lumens really bright enough for dark country roads? Ie for seeing rather than being seen.

I'd say so. Of course you could have brighter lights, but 200 is still a decent amount. My old moon mask had 70 and those were bright 'be seen lights'. I'd definitely consider the blinder to be a 'see where you're going whilst being seen light.' Wiggle recently did a light comparison, and it was almost as bright as an Exposure Sirius.

  • Battery started giving me a low battery notification after about 2 hours of use (on the dual high beam setting that is, which in some cases is not needed, but I will use it anyway as I'd rather be safe than sorry.)

  • Those lights upthread from ebay are pretty excellent.
Will be further testing them in the coming weeks.
Will be interesting to see how they deal with pissing rain, and 5am/ 10pm commutes.

  • Anyone found a better way of mounting a Hope Vision one? Great light, shit mount.

Shit light, annoying but relatively sturdy mount.

    Duct tape.

I bought one of these, seems fairly good, bright and good side vision

  • Yeah, got one of those myself - bright and good flashing modes. A pair of triple A batteries lasts for a good two months, as well, when used an hour a day.

  • I am destroyer of lights.

Yesterday after taking my Knog Blinder out on a ride (which missed the rain) I came down into the cellar to find 3 of the 4 leds on, and it wouldn't switch off or change the flash pattern.

Eventually it turned off and three of the 4 leds have condensation behind the lens. I really don't understand why or how. Spot the difference between the top left LED and the rest:

It's working again now, but I'm now unconvinced of its reliability and I suspect it may die soon if water has somehow got inside, even if its just condensation.

I am never, ever buying another fucking Knog because they always break and its always water ingress. FFS.

I have three Exposure flares, 1 is completely broken and I can't work out why - it's actually the metal case that is the problem, not the LED bit that screws in. I have found that generally water gets in because when they are switched off the lens has to be unscrewed. Also they may take the Exposure batteries but other CR123A batteries tend not to fit because they are too big, I have to pull them out again with a pair of pliers, which knackers the batteries.

The problem with the CherryBomb is eventually the plastic clips that hold it in break, I've had this happen to several. Seems to be a design flaw.

I suspect the Hope Vision 3 is a light I might not be able to destroy, as I'm very happy with my two Vision 1's, but it is stupidly expensive for a back light.

How are people getting on with their Moon's long term? I've enjoyed USB charging with the Blinder but I need something that's actually water/condensation proof, not something that says it is but actually isn't...

these lezynes are great from what i've experienced. 350 lumens front and 70 lumens rear with good side visibility. The brakets are not built in but they're very easy to change over and makes it easier to just pop the light off when you're going into a shop or something.

  • +1 for the Smart light from Planet X above. Great light and cheap. Brought one for each bike as I couldn't ascertain if spare clamps from elsewhere were the correct ones. Smart seem to do millions of brackets.

This light appears to be sold by lots of other sites as well under different names and brands.

My only gripe is that I feel like I'm going to break it every time I take the lens off to put new batteries in. Excellent light though, which people couldn't fail to miss.

  • I'm still running the older version. Thing is, even if they die, you can buy three of them before you've chalked up the cost of an Exposure whatsit.

  • Just got a Moon Comet set for 35quid. Not bad. Good quality and bright enough to be seen even in heavy downpour. Quite happy with them. The bracket isn't too bad but I have a feeling the rubber mount might overstretch over time and give way over bumpy surface.

  • They're a lots sturdier than the old Exposure rubber mount which used to fail quite dramatically (at least on me).

  • after less than a month the button has vanished from my Blackburn flee, off to Evans this lunchtime to see if I can get a replacement...

    (Luckily I saved the receipt)

  • anywhere that sells the rubber clip for the Moon Shield?

  • The cable on my Hope Vision 2 front light is starting to fail. This will be the 2nd time it's died in 2-3 years.

  • email Hope or the shop you got it from.

  • Yeah, that's what I did last time. It had the desired effect, so I expect that to work this time too.

  • It's out of warranty though - Hope only officially offer a 1 year warranty.

  • But that's something that's already failed so it's warranty is fresh.

  • Yeah, that has no basis in law but if they want to continue trading without a bag of shit delivered to their door every day.. you get the idea..

  • Hm, looking at the previous RMA it is actually about a year to the day (RMA raised with Wiggle 22nd Oct 2012)

  • anywhere that sells the rubber clip for the Moon Shield?

    new page bump

  • Yes!

    Thanks.

Edit: getting one for free from Wiggle.

  • Is there any legislation that limits the lights that can be used on a bike in terms of maximum output?

I was finding my 205 lumen dynamo to be perfectly good for being seen but not particular great at seeing pot holes, so last year I added a 1,500 lumen Lumicycle mountain bike lamp, with a 12' beam aimed about 5m > 10m in front of the bike.

That was good, but now that Chiswick has so many lights out of action, and as parts of Hounslow are moving to "moonlight LEDs" for street lighting I also want to see farther down the road.

So I dug out my older 6' beam Lumicycle lamp and fitted that too also aimed 10m ahead.

I'm currently commuting with over 3,200 lumens and it's wonderful.

Not a car turns out in front of me.
Not a single pedestrian steps out.
Vehicles in a queue of traffic turn slightly out of my path.

    It's bliss.

But... is there anything that prohibits a push bike from having such an insane amount of lighting?

I feel like a mod with 3 powerful lights on the bike:
