  • I had a play with Hoke's, actually useless for proper riding with other people in the dark, brightness level borderline antisocial. Not cheap either.

Seem well built though and the USB charging is handy.

thing is excellent side/top/bottom visibility so you can angle it down when in a situation like that...

  • Unless you have them angled down / diffused, these uber-lights are for daytime riding. This 'so awesomely bright it blinded drivers and other riders' attitude displayed by some riders is selfish and irresponsible.

I've got the Exposure RedEye (like the flare, but runs off the power of my front light), but only use it on my own at night tucked behind the seatstays, pointing down, or during solo daylight rides in miserable/twighlight conditions), but would still only chuck on a bog standard LED blinker for a group ride.

If you get to the point where a safety device starts compromising your safety, you've gone too far.

  • I just got this magicshine bundle through this weekend

    http://www.magicshine.co.uk/discounted-bundles/budget-mountain-bike-bundle-808.html

was feeling extremely vulnerable riding in the dark to croydon and back for work which knocked my confidence in general for the past weeks (small echoes of my crash I think). think with these on in sensible positions on the bike will make me much more visible to other traffic and less worried about riding fast roads in dark conditions.

only annoyance is the fucking cables from the battery. have to wind them around top tube which looks shit. might have to get the electrical tape out.

  • Who cares what it looks like in the dark?

  • i just use a large maglight tosave money and doubles up as a baton wen i go through hackeney fields

(also somtimes use it as a pretend microfone wen i have a sing-song lolo)

  • Anyone got a Niteflux red zone 4?

100 USD through the Australian manufacturer. I can't find a UK stockist. Presumably it'd be 120 USD after customs?

Its more it flaps about and is annoying than anything else.

  • Anyone have a Moon Gem2? Looking to get something that can be swopped from bike to bike without a bracket.

  • Knog Boomer isn't actually that bad and has a good solid mount system.
The rear is a single 1W LED, and the front is a 1W with 2 200mW strobes.
    I think...

Are also handy for unlit country roads anywhere outside of the smoke where you need to see where you're going.

Very true, I hope the "dipped" mode on my strada isn't blinding still...gonna have to test that out in more detail tomorrow.

Cheers. This will be the second choice if I don't get the Gem.

  • I find the moon shield probably one of the best rear light to use in and out of the sity and extremely bright for such a small thing, for the moon mask, it was working alright for 6 months then i found it not as bright as when i first used it (maybe because I dropped it on the floor) so upgraded to Moon xp300! Much better for the light and similar performance to the Hope Vision One, only differences is that it is the Moon xp300 is usb charged!

I was talking about the rears specifically. I've got a fuck off front light for charging down pitch black country lanes, but I do angle it down a little, and often switch it to the lowest setting if I think there's a risk of blinding oncoming traffic of any shape or form (and also if I'm in a group and not on the front); or it's a flat well defined road; or it's a braw, bricht, moonlicht nicht; etc.

  • ^ Fair point, with rears that's something I hadn't considered....I have the flare for my commute (unlit deepest darkest countryside), can see how it would be unsuitable if riding in a group...it's not subtle!

  • The Moon Shield is an awesome rear light and at £35 it's very reasonable. Small, USB rechargeable, well built, super waterproof, built-in bag clip, fantastic power if necessary and has a well designed, strong, easily removable and detachable rubber strap.

It has 5 modes, a standard 20 lumen steady mode, high 40 lumen steady mode, "overdrive" 60 lumen steady mode and two high-power strobe modes. A steady 20 lumens is perfectly fine for riding at night with others.

Like Apollo said though, it has great side/top/bottom visibility, that accompanied with the fact you can angle it in any vertical direction is great – even the high-power/strobe is perfectly fine for night time riding with others if you angle it downwards (which also has the benefit of nicely illuminating the patch of road directly behind you).

  • Anyone had trouble with the holster of the Lezyne Femto pinging off when you try and remove them? Just sent this to their customer services.
sure you are removing the right side? one is fat and fixed-ish one is slim and easy to get off, I have mistakenly flipped the fat one which allows the thinifer to bugger off across the road...

  • I wish I had read that before getting the exposure flare :(
    USB charging is so handy

Yeah, I realised that, but it's cold, dark, everyone's rushing to get in the pub after lock-up. The difference in size is hardly discernible you don't want to be standing around trying to figure out which side to take out.

  • I super glued mine in, design fail on a pretty good light, which is sad.

  • Yeah, once I find replacements I'll glue them in, so annoying though.

its the way forward and you all know it

This thread: https://www.lfgss.com/thread89659.html rates the Ledus Wheelus 10 led lights higher than the monkeylectric ones, and the chap who makes them has joined the forum to get feedback about them.

    They're cheaper too - http://leduswheelus.com/

None in stock at the moment, but I'm sure they will be back soon. I have to say that I really like mine, it's so good to be able to do your own patterns.

  • Been rocking two knog gekos on each side of my bars.
One geko on the back (and another on my bag if I wear one), plus one of these:

Thinking about getting a beam up front. For sight rather than safety.

"Up to 6 hours runtime" - will it really peg out after 6 hours on low ? That seems bad.
