so my cheap, super-bright SSC-P7 doesn't like the cold, which tends to be a problem for something primarily used at night, in winter.
Anything below 5°C and when I switch it on it flickers through random settings for a second or so then switches off. Usually if I repeat this a load of times it warms up and starts to work properly.
Is it likely to be the battery pack or the head unit? I've heard of drastically reduced battery life in the cold, but not this.

What kind of battery? If it's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_cells, the Energizer Ultimate Lithium (Li/FeS2) range has excellent low temperature performance, down to -40F/-40C
A rechargeable battery in this application should be more or less self heating, so keep the light indoors and turn it on before you go out.

it's a rechargable lithium-ion, I think. Looks like the best solution will be your second, leave it on low as soon as I leave the house. Seems a waste but better than fiddling around with it whilst riding.

Are you sure there's no moisture in the circuitry?

Doesn't sound like it is the temperature to me. I have had on of these and the failure was due to dampness and corrosion in the circuitry on the top of the battery pack.

I put it in the fridge, it doesn't work. I take it out, it works. Therefore I assumed it was temperature related.
I also waterproofed the battery with a fair amount of sealant.

Does it have a set of built-in rechargeable batteries?
If so, your batteries are dead... no more recharge cycles left in them.
The fridge trick is used in prisons to prolong the life of batteries. It helps restore some of the charge capacity after it's been run down.
Biting batteries achieves the same... but shortens the life dramatically in a different way.
Basically... the super-cheap bit resulted in them shipping super-cheap batteries.

A wee update on this. Getting about 2 hours usable time in a "see where I'm going" utility. After that it's probably good for another few hours "being seen" but I always charge it at that point. A nice(r) but pricey but not joystick-pricey version would probably be one of those new lezyne lights + the new helmet bracket.

It's definitely the head unit and not the battery, I've placed both in the freezer, one-at-a-time and only have problems when the torch itself is cold.
Seems as though low-power does not generate enough warmth to stop it malfunctioning either. grrr.

I take it you've tried disassembling it when cold and making sure all the screwed-together bits are tight? Also check for dry soldered joints on the PCB.
The emitter works loose from the reflector block on mine and needs retightening periodically. -

I've tried disassembly but I couldn't remove the heat sink block without a long pin spanner. The emitter seemed to be done up pretty tight and on reassembly and testing it didn't seem any better.
It worked okay for a few months, with almost daily usage. I guess I shouldn't expect too much more for £35.

Only £12.95 too, so it doesn't break the bank.
http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/rsp-rx1-3watt-front-and-1-2watt-rear-light-set-id61900.html
3 watt front light and 1/2 watt rear light.
Bought this recently and while the front is nice and bright with a decent bracket, the rear is bright but a way to slow flash cycle, and it doesnt have the 'group ride' mode that the very similar smart 1/2 watt rear has. Fine for a spare but will be buying a smart half watt rear (again) for primary duties.

my flea has taken offence to the addition of the smart and has now started playing funny buggers.
On another note my mate picked up one of these the other day and I was very impressed with it

tried this out a couple of times now, very impressed by the brightness and judging by the previous one I had, should be a week or so before I need to charge it.

UK15 is £15 off £100 until Dec. 9 and UK10 is £10 off £75 until Dec. 9 it looks like. Try that?
Back to lights. I ordered the RSP Astrum yesterday based on advice in this thread. Suspect I will add to glowing reviews later. -

I am now fully 'magicshine'd up. With 900lumens up front, and 85 lumens out back. Both running off the same battery, which seems to be lasting OK. I will probably invest in a extra front kit before too long. It would be nice to have a spare front, and a spare battery for longer winter rides (I have a couple back-up knogs for the back).
this turned up today.
I'll give it a grease before taking out in the rain. The casing actually overlaps itself a bit so I'm hoping it will keep the wet out ok.
Impressed with the brightness and it seems well built, only niggle is that you need a screw driver to take the bracket off which makes it a bit fiddly to swap it between bikes. I think I'll have a look for a spare bracket I think, just to make life a bit easier.
