Re Surrey Hills, 48x16 a little ambitious?
-

willo, if only i knew what your thighs looked like!!!!! i don't know about the experts but i think you need to be aiming for 70 gear inches. there are others on here who know more about it than me. I ride a 42 x 16 and i wouldn't like to go any higher on that front ring but then i've got girl's legs. (clintsmoker speaking not jonny who can turn a more powerful ratio)

I've put both these in the Events calendar.. which makes my chances of turning up 0.001% more likely. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing :)

I want to get involved in more forum rides. I haven't been on one yet but I did put my name down for the Docklands one last night and I'd quite like to put my name down for a few more. This Tuesday night ride thing sounds like fun but I'm a bit worried about the distances involved. I'm gonna have to categorically say no to the 5 Hills ride though. There's no amount of hardening the fuck up that will get me through that torture! The only riding I do is the daily commute to work and a few casual miles around Bethnal Green/Hackney in the evenings and weekend when bored/off to see mates. So...the 30th Sept ride sounds doable...I think. I hear you're not the sort of peeps to let the weak fall behind and forget all about them but, equally, I'm not expecting anyone to wait until Thursday afternoon when I'm recovered after having collapsed in a sweaty heap Tuesday evening. Any suggestions as to how many miles I should be doing in the evening to get ready for these longer rides? I can do the 6miles to work and the 6miles back home easily but that's with 7hours of sitting down in between. Or is it way too soon to be attempting something like this? 30th Sept is pretty damn close.
Cheers!

Oh really...? resists temptation to post picture of own legs
Count me in for the 30th! Wish I could make the 16th too, but I have a prior engagement with Ditchling Beacon.

wools,
if you don't get to do much many miles don't worry too much . the ride on the 30th is a beginners to intermediate ride and you will be okay. just know that the distance will push you physically and mentally but you'll be okay. you will need padded shorts, snacks, water, lights, puncture repair kit etc.
Have no fears on this one though and it will be great to see you. -

@clintsmoker - Cheers for responding fella. That all sounds good to me. Especially the beginners to intermediate part! Looks like I got me some purchasing to do though. Namely padded shorts and proper lights. I got those little LED Backupz things but I gather something a lil more heavy duty will be required yeah? I'll put me name down when a dedicated Much Hadham thread pops up. Will be cool to meet y'all also!

yeah wools,
lights can be purchased for around 80squid on wiggle or cycle surgery do a rechargeable unit for the same price made by cateye. plenty strong enough. normal rear lights suffice. you know the padded shorts story is the same as most of life.......the more you pay the better you get but again i reckon they are out there for 20-40squid easy enough. as far as i'm aware most of the lads and lasses wear skins under cut off trousers -

L's and G's
Jonny and clintsmoker are glad to announce the Tuesday Night Ride Club. For those of you who bought your lights for the Dunwich Dynamo and don't want to leave them on the shelf gathering dust we welcome you all to a fortnightly ride in the dark. Fear not, we are thinking along the lines of returning home for tea and medals for 1 am rather than a 120 miles and two days off work.
We envisage riding fortnightly in the surrounding countryside accessable by a short train ride if necessary.
to set the ball rolling we have two rides planned already.
16th Sept - The 5 hills in Surrey ( 30 tough hilly miles)
30th Sept - Much Hadham (leave east london, halfway to cambridge and back 50 flat easy miles)
we'll post the rides individually soon but leave comments if you are interested and if you have any suggestions for future rides.
thanks people and look forward to rolling with you
