  • Reasons why I like SS over fixed

    • No pedal strike on corners or kerbs

    • You can eliminate toe overlap by leaving your foot back when taking a sharp turn

    • Reaching 40mph down a hill by doing nothing except sitting on the saddle has to be one of the most fun things to do on a bike!

(I had thought of about 20 different things when deciding between fixed and ss but can't think of them now)
you do have point there, you can take the piss on an ss! i've got a couple of ss mountain bikes, but i don't ride them very often because i'm riding my brown bsa fIxed beater conversion... which is quite fun... smooth and silent... i just like riding bikes generally... its a laugh and gets you around london for free with no waiting in traffic jams and no parking restrictions. end of?

  • I love riding fixed but I do miss that freewheeling down a hill experience, always reminds me of being a kid. After years of riding FWs I have to keep telling myself that I am riding fixed otherwise I would forget and try to FW.

  • its the other way round for me. if i'm riding a bike with a freewheel, i forget i can stop pedaling! and when i do, it feels weird. freewheeling down a big hill with tears streaming across your face going so fast you can't see properly! i love it!! bikes are great eh?

  • I'm building a Singlespeed for off-road use. Because I want to up the fun and fitness factors. I dont want to be approching climbs thinking...

right I'll shift up my cassette a bit...
no wait its quite steep I'll shift to a smaller chainring...
I should shift now so that I can dial out any chainrub..
    no wait I'll loose momentum....

I just want to crank down and go for it, and think about nothing else but the terrain and my surroundings.

Singlespeeding - hard on the legs easy on the head :)

  • i built up a SS MTB for myself for the trails back home in Cornwall, not had the chance to use it yet but am hoping to this summer.

  • I rode the Dalby Forest Red route on my Haro Mary Rigid SingleSpeed 29er. It was fantastic! I was riding with 13 other guys, all on gears, and only three of us completed the full Red Route of 23 miles. Can't reccommend it enough, and it really ups the fitness!

  • My SS 29r build has stalled due to lack of funds, this thread is teasing :{

I've never had a problem on corners bu it's usually too greasy to go fast round corners when I seem to be riding.

R.e kerb, if you are riding that close to kerbs that you have to worry about pedal strike you're riding too close to the kerb or in a silly gap. Be careful.

  • Smallfurry: You live in Stavanger or something don't you. If you ever pass trough Oslo/Asker you can have a tease-ride on mine:)

And btw, why I ride SS? I like it.

  • Also, at the OP, if a clicking sound can seriously detract from your riding experience then I would worry.

  • ive just come into possesion of a GT 2007 Avalanche for £50 off a mate who doesnt ride it. dont know much about MTBs and disk brakes but it seems pretty decent. im thinking about single speeding it for a summer in cornwall.

P!MP- wheres your kernow home to?

  • GT Avalanche eh? I remember they were great bike, hope they still are.

Don't do it often but sometimes the only choice at some traffic lights is to wait behind a bus for 2 minutes (no thanks, I like my lungs), go up on the pavement (not usualy worth the hassle) or squeeze down the side of the bus to get to the front of the line ( safest place to be imo). Either that or squeezing through gaps between cars and traffic islands where it's nice just to have to concentrate on getting through the gap instead of 'hmmm are my pedals gonna smack this on the way through?'

Used to be one off a Zaskar! I had a fantastic Zaskar LE way back....mavic deemax front and back and only 7 speed!

    Wicked.

    Am I showing my age?

  • man 7 speeds used to be just enough, and now I'm hearing people wanting 9 speeds! surely we don't need that much?
