About time there was a decent velodrome in Liverpool. (Though cycle round Sefton park is great but a long circuit -2.9 miles)

Looks like a nice training track but it's gonna be difficult running any proper track meetings there as the officials can't see across the track clearly with all the BMX jumps in the way.
In other news. Progress is being made on the Derby Velodrome. Plans have been cleared by Environment Agency:

I'm off for a taster day at Newport velodrome in early November, my first time on a track. I'm really looking forward to it, but does anyone have any useful advice? What was your first track experience like?
I've ridden fixed, but am almost always ss on my commute to work. So I don't expect the fixed wheel ride should be too much of an issue, but is there anythinng else I should look out for?

just remember to pedal and you'll be fine.

The 'putting things inside velodromes' idea seems obvious until addressing the practicalities of usage.
Still only effectively one venue at a time, use of the one will nullify the other when major events/busy sessions are going on.
Being that both BMX and track clubs have their bigger sessions on Saturday mornings, there's bound to be some issues.
Can you imagine a BMX session going on in the middle of an HHV Saturday induction?Brilliant if you've got either a tunnel or bridge, or if toilets and a water point are available in track centre. Otherwise you've got major traffic across the track all the time. Already a big problem at HH when busy from what I've seen.
The reason Manchester and Newport work as multi sport arenas is that people playing 5a side, ping pong and badminton can do it without walking across the middle of the track whilst a session is in progress.

I wonder if a tunnel or a bridge is planned for HHV down the line....crossing the track last sunday at the DC6 seemed to be pretty hairy at times.

"crossing the track" should never be hairy, as you simply cross when it's clear.
However it's certainly hairy for riders and officials when people don't. A bit like lemming pedestrians crossing the road.Part of the solution is to allow only riders and helpers into the track centre, not spectators. Not very "6 day" I know, but then neither is an outdoor track with no other method of getting track centre.

I cant remember seeing one at HH but a gated entrance on the opposite side of the track is what we use at BCC, enables us to allow spectators good view of home straight whilst controlling entry /exit of the far side. would be good for all future new builds.

Last thing you want on a big track is access from the back straight. You'd be providing an access point which wouldn't be easily manned or controlled. People would be too lazy to use it plus it doesn't actually solve the problem of morons crossing a busy track.
HH is so big that you cannot communicate with anyone on the opposite side of the track without a phone or radio! -

man it and control it with a marshal and a lock.
and if people are too lazy to use it we dont want them there anyway,
guess the HH situation results from the mainly single entrance access -

Fine on a small track. Like I explained, doesn't work at HH and doesn't solve the problem, merely creates a new one.

Being that both BMX and track clubs have their bigger sessions on Saturday mornings, there's bound to be some issues. At Liverpool I'm told it's v.likely only one or other will be in use at any one time from when it opens next week, not just around major events or busy sessions. As you say, makes it one venue not the two they planned.
Creates problem for bmx too as there's no flat area to warm up or work on skills within. A guy I coach with says the car park not suitable (cars) nor can they use velo for this as the track folks rightly don't want it covered in bmx mud/dust.
Over time & with experience of use these things will either be worked around or changes made to improve.
The membership scheme as I read it seems to exclude non-locals from making much use of either track too. Maybe I misunderstood that.

Bit of a shame that. Probably typical of projects where the users/people with actual experience are not given enough input.

if anyone wants to know. this thursday, at huyton, 1pm till 4.30.
opening / inductions.

^ unlikely to be able to make it as working, but hope it goes well & is well attended.
^^ am told the council already looking into a bridge for accessing the centre for bmx, plus a flat tarmac area to warmup on. Both will help.

was ok. met a few other cyclists who where really ace. waited until all the officials buggered of to bask in the glow of some bloke called boredman or something and had my first go on an actual track. ive not been accredited yet so really shouldnt of, but hey.......
its a wee bit scary at first being right up at the top of the bank looking down at how steep it is. but as you speed up, it just feels more comfortable. cant wait to get fully stuck into a good session there.
