big daddy wayne - can you confirm where you are from? (what are your sushi/sashimi credentials).
No offence to the Brits out there but when it comes to recommendations on Asian (or Oriental as you would call it) food, even your professional restaurant critics can be way off the mark.
I am always hankering for good (reasonably priced) sashimi and struggle in the UK. although akari on the cnr of Essex & Canonbury in Islington is decent - and prob my fav London japanese eatery.

I miss the amazing sushi of Melbourne.
However I struggled with the full-on-ness of sushi in Tokyo. I think we get a 'western' version.

Does that mean, due to the fact that I am English, that I'm not allowed to rate Nitto Products, Vivalo frames etc.??
But I can wax lyrical about Whitcomb, Brooks etc.!!

where do you want me to start! 75p a plate (2 pieces).... bowl of amazing Miso soup for a quid.
eat Sushi about twice a week here.. im gonna miss Japan :(

Vivalos are actually toned-down 'western' versions of NJS frames. If you have an acquired palette you might want to try a Nagasawa or 3Rensho.

That hotbed of all things fresh fish, South Wales
Used to be a chef though so I'd say i've got a fair idea of what's good and the fact that they regularly have busloads of japanese tourists eat in there is also a fair indicator, give it a go!
best Sushi I've had was in Sydney, glorious

The best Sushi/Japanese place in London is Sakura on Hanover Street imo
Ace food and always full of Japanese people. Has all the usuals, live fish in tanks when you walk in, hustle and bustle of chefs on the left preparing...
Even has Japanese TV on the box!If anyone ever ventures south Tsunami in Clapham is LUSH too - head chef is some matey who used to work with Nobu in the first Park Lane restaurant

Where can I get okonomiyaki in London? Anywhere? No? Damn you all to hell!
-

Zuma in Knightsbridge and Roka on Charlotte St are good Japanese restaurants but more Robota based than pure sushi.
But what would I know?

cheers bdw - sounds like you know your fish from your fishes, hope I didn't offend
and being a born and bred Sydneysider, appreciate the last comment.

I'll try that place out, gf always complains about sushi here being crap compared to Oz... You were a chef? I salute you, BDW! I'm off to make a Napoli sauce now... Stir, stir, stir, stir...

seen it around a few places but can't verify quality. some 'well fed' friends told me the japan centre on picadilly does great okonomiyaki

both nice food - but like most things in london you pay for it

abeno, two locations. one near the british museum, one just near leicester square tube toward seven dials. not cheap, but good.
there used to be an okonomiyaki stall at upmarket near spitalfields on sundays as well. just as good for loads cheaper, they weren't there last time i went though. -

i love okinomiyaki.. they cook it infront of you at my local yakisoba resturant...hhmmmmm. speaking of which, its almost dinner time!
and to my knowledge, they dont do whale or dolphin Sushi/Sashimi (would be too expensive for the kind of resturants i go to anyway) they do have raw chicken and horse though.......

Haven't had the sushi at Sakura, but they have excellent non-sushi Japanese food (miso cod, agedashi tofu, etc), and reasonably priced. They even do shabu-shabu if you reserve it ahead of time.
Zuma in Knightsbridge and Roka on Charlotte St are good Japanese restaurants but more Robota based than pure sushi.
I'm not denying that Asian-fusion restaurants like Zuma, Roka, etc have yummy food... but it's not really Japanese.
Ginnan on Roseberry Avenue
best sushi I've had in London,
lunch box prepared in front of you - £6 and it had blisteringly fresh cuttlefish and mackerel in there
