if skidding is "only in emergencies" and you can't skid, what do you do in an emergency ?
-
• #128
You don't need to transfer weight forwards loads, just jump your legs a bit to un-weight the rear.
Please practice a bit! -

I personally see skidding as "only in emergencies", but then i notice many riders skidding and skipping all over the place...
yes, these people are called pricksters.
use a brake for "emergencies" then, if not for the sake of your knees, unless you are convinced you need to be a complete victim

....i now await a barrage of "GET A FUCKING BREAK YOU MUG" from you kind people :)
I've heard that Greece is lovely at this time of year.

Please practice a bit!cheers for the advice everyone, but what you mention about jumping your legs could do the trick, i have just been practicing and yet could'nt quite start a skid, and when i lent forward my knees got in the way of the drops so a little jump might just do the trick :)
i'l go out later and practice some more! (ps for the record i have put a break back on!) -

Are you riding on the track? No.
Are you riding in a place where 1 ton masses of steel pull out in front of you without warning? Yes.The answer whether to ride brakeless should be pretty clear. Unless you like pain

you speak perfect sense, yet why is that brakeless is so appealing! :)
at the end of the day we all know a brake makes sense yet many dont use one... -

Anyone who rides brakeless on the road is a prat.

Especially when they are pushing 90 GI or something stupid like that.

Ok fuck going brakeless! you convinced me, i will build up a track frame and go to herne hill if i want to ride brakeless.

Oooohhh... errrr
I never rode 99gi brakless for a few months when my brake cable disintegrated and I never got around to fixing it...

Has anyone ever done any impromptu testing?
Three riders :
- one with a typical weak-arse Paul's lever
- one with something powerful like a Cane Creek 200T
- one riding brakeless
All three riders set off in a line, accelerate together matching speed then simultaneously hit the brakes.
Measure related stopping distances, then document results here on LondonFGSS.
I know I switched out my bull-bars and 200T for drops and a Paul's. I did this solely for looks and my braking ability has been significantly reduced as a result. Personally I wouldn't go the next step to brakeless but it would be interesting to quantify just what stopping distance people are trading in the name of hipsterism.

calm down. nothing wrong with hipsters, twats or cunts.
brakeless no brakes up to them really.17mph when riding to work is stupid. going slower is much better and friendler. i find people that blast off at the light very funny.
17mph is for the weekend. -

not research that is really going to change the world is it?

Just because your bike has a brake doesn't mean you have to use it. The only reason why people ride without is for looks.
Go on, try and argue round that.
hardly. i ride brakeless is because i enjoy the riding experience. you're so much more focussed on the road, having to anticipate things by reading the traffic and road layout. the enjoyment comes from not having a brake to rely on and the sense of mastery you get when you feel like you are riding safely and efficiently without one.
i rode fixed with a front brake for 3 years before i ever considered going brakeless and i only started to when the brake i got didn't reach the wheels on my new build. it turned out i enjoyed riding brakeless and i intend to keep my bike that way.
either way i don't think it should be encouraged or discouraged, people just have to accept that they're the only one to blame if it goes tits up as a result or riding without a brake.

Re-cycle, do you have any kind of foot retention? you hasn't mentioned anything about foot retention from your post.

argh this is so dumb
period? nope not yet, its not my time of the month yet..... joke... bad joke
Sensible advice, i'l fit one today, and once i have mastered skidding it'l be off!
