You need an extra category:
I own a helmet, don't use it, except to decorate my handlebars

honestly. We're adults and it's up to our own discression whether we wear a helmet or not. I wear one when in mass starts or on the track where it's manditory. I wear it if i am extremely tired or know I have a very long ride ahead of me where I may bonk.
If I had worn it when I smashed my face I would have broken my neck (according to maxiofacial)On the other hand I would never be comfortable letting my mom ride without one..and they do help avoid injury in more cases than not.
But then again motorists tend to give wider birth to cyclists without helmets...
People who blindly demand you wear a helmet ignore the fact that we are have common sense and the ability to judge our own skill and competence on a bike.
If you're concerned wear a freakin helmet... don't ask people about it.

No fair, can you take a vote off no helmet and add it to bollocks?
-
• #12
I ride like a fuckwit with helmet and defensively without.... it evens itself out that way
-
• #13
Just this once, I've reset the poll as the added option basically had changed it.
So if you've voted, you need to vote again.
And if you haven't voted... feel free to vote now.

i am a doctor and i wear a helmet (except on the very rare occasions that i don't)

I don't fit into any of the options. I need a ''I wear a helmet when I commute, but hardly ever any other time'' option.

Erm - I do wear a helmet on specific occasions. Although the last option could cover all eventualities.

I read that thread and bought a helmet now what I know what it feels like to come off a fast bike at speed (four broken ribs and a broken scapula)I now wear a helmet on the fast bike
Bollox if I am going to wear one on my no-brakes hipster bike though
seems a bit silly having no brakes but then wearing a helmet for 'safety' reasons -
• #19
Don't think that logical extension is credible though. No brakes isn't inherently dangerous.

I wear a helmet commuting to work and home, because of the increased traffic in rush hour.. If I go out later (which i always do) I don't bring my helmet..
-
• #21
Definitely wear it to/from work.... don't bother when just going to supermarket/slacking around the streets...

where the hell are you riding that drivers are that concerned with the safety of cyclists? sounds like a step closer to nirvana than where I am
also - what cracks me up are those people riding around with a helmet straped to their backpack rather than on their head. surely if you have it on your person, the easiest way to transport it is on your head! guess some people are way too concerned with the vibe they give off

When my Dad was racing, I saw a helmet save his life, or at least prevent him from being a vegtable for the rest of his life. His Specialized helmet was cracked thru, but his bonce was un touched.
I know they dont look cool, but my advice . . . get a lid that fits, wear it, and you'll be able to grow old disgracefully (as I hope we all intend to!) -

Gonna have to call you out on this one...I believe you are an academic doctor, not a medical one? If so, (and either ways) what the fuck weight does that add to your personal opinion? -

but is one say necessary for popping down the shops
Hi all,
Currently I don't wear a helmet. I ride though london every day and i see a mix bag of people who do and dont. I know that there are various arguments for and against wearing helmets, in terms of are they safer with or than without.
So my first poll...
