+1.
bill - your surly looks lovely. -

I wouldn't want a frame built by that old boy.

Those new old-looking Colnagos are nice - I think pj (pj) or someone posted it up during Le Tour.
That cheap one is the same as all the other cheap carbon + Ultegra deals getting bandied about these days. Cost is going to increase anyway - you need pedals, the bars are yuck, the saddle has to be swapped out, and the wheels are fucking budget. Hardly aimed at the discerning rider, is it.
Your Surly is exactly what you wanted, and you were happy to pay a premium of a few hundred quid to get a shop to knock it together in a hurry.
This kind of knee-jerk 'oh shit, I could've got a Colnago' nonsense sounds like the beginnings of a mid-life crisis to me. Hopefully we've managed to nip it in the bud.

No, it's probably the onset of senility.
What was your name again, young man?
-

I went back and had a look, and the saddle is nasty, the wheels, well, vile, and the bars are wack.
And it's got a bell fitted. A bell on a Colnago!
Let's burn down E***s HQ.

They have De Rosa too.
There was a time when a dealer had to have a clue to stock this kinda kit.
There was a time when this kinda kit wasn't generic Taiwanese.

any excuse to post this:
i always wanted a colnago. in the end i got this one on ebay. it's amazing, and lighter than my dedacciai condor acciao. considerably so.
nb - gear levers were on wrong way round when i bought it.

It's only the entry level Colnagos that are built in Taiwan. Majority still made in Italy.
And yes PJ your bike is very nice.

That is really quite nice indeed! Worth posting twice. I love the panel decals!
But I would replace those lever for Simplex. Nice looking, work much better than the Campy ones. Only downside is finding cables to fit.

My De Rosa was made by Mr. De Rosa in Italy. If I had a picture of it, I'd post it. Hopefully, this means that my mid-life crisis is already dealt with. :-)

evans have stocked De Rosa for years........

How long before the rest of production moves to Taiwan?
Better to get over the Italian wanque factor now and embrace Asian bike construction :) -
• #44
if they can build microchips in taiwan, i'm pretty confident they can lay up some carbon fibre.
-
• #45
Oh, they can.. I heart Asian manufacturing.
-
• #46
Evans has started their 2008 stock clearance I believe, hence the cheap price.

tell it to White Industries. They moved production to the far east in the early 90s and their quailty and rep dropped- until they brought it all back in house.

whereabouts in the "far east"? it's a large and diverse area... i'm sure there are some dodgy operators out there, but there are also some quality ones. same as europe or america, really.

That's a legal requirement on all new bikes - there's no law saying that you can't take it off though...
Come to think off it (which I almost did) I've got one on my Colnago - it's too quiet not too... -

I thought they avoided the bell/reflectors issue if it was a 'race' bike. Guess that cheap piece of shit, I mean Colnago, doesn't count. ;)
