thank you spa cycles :)

anyone used the randonneur cross? just about to fit a couple for tow path duties...
-
• #980
I'd go for the Trail version.
The cross has a pattern designed for soft ground. The trail still rolls pretty well on hard pack and the road. I have them in 35c and I like 'em.
-
• #981
you sure? Have you tried the cross? I already have them at home and they're not much different to the regular one?
Should also mention, Tow Paths up north are 70-80% dirt....
**Randonneur Cross/Pro **
High-performance, multi-purpose, 120 TPI trekking tyre, a solid performer on city streets and also suitable for use on moderate off-road trails. Fuller tread for grip in dirt, other characteristics as Randonneur Pro.

Go for the Trail.

Too late unfortunately, already got them. Paid just £20 for pair with tubes off here though so happy enough.
What tyres you running on your touring build?
Also did you get a geared hub for it? Planet x have got the Alfine 8sp heavily reduced in the sale.

I've found Randos Trail more versatile, albeit heavy and sluggish on the tarmac.
My touring bike has Contis Contact Sport - only because the rims are 17mm internal width.
I will see if I can squeeze something like Schwalbe Supremes in, but at the moment can't afford them (and all those tyre sizes in Imperial measurement give me headache).I'd get that hub if/once Planet X refunds for that Chris King headset they miss-sold me. I've been waiting for a week now :-s

Non matching tyres?!
Some people seem to run a 28c Rando rear, and a 23 or 25c Rubino front. Opinions?
-
• #987
I was joking. I also had 28 Rando on the rear and a 23 Gatorskin on the front.
-
• #988
+1
Something stickier (and lighter) on the front is good. If you get a Rubino, the Pro version is the one with the puncture strip. Costs a tenner more.
-
• #989
I'm pretty sure the difference between the pro and the standard rubino is that the pro is folding therefore lighter whereas the standard has a wire bead.
-
• #990
Er yeah. Your right.
That's weird. I have a 2 year old Rubino Pro (version 1 I guess) right here that has a wire bead. It's not a folder.
Perhaps things have changed.

This is London my friend...
errr dogs shit everywhere.

I have 35c Rando's on the Cotic and stap my vittles they are heavy- you can feel a serious flywheel effect when you try to slow them/go up a hill
-
• #997
Randonneurs half price (£9.99) at Edinburgh Bikes at the moment, just 28's available but just fitted some and they seem the same size as a Gatorskin 25c.
The picture is wrong these are the plain non-reflective variety
-
• #998
Anyone got any experience of Randonneur Hypers? I was thinking of fitting some in 38c to my touring bike which I still haven't built up.
-
• #999
You should take it to EvansCyles and ask ED the SCOBLE to fit it fo ya.
-
• #1000
He'll pump it up to 120 for you as well as part of the service.
The thread looks different on wider tyres. Once they go over 32mm, they look more chunky and squared out, if you know what I mean.
I like the trail version for the winter park riding, but it's a very slow tyre.
