  • put it back on then, you don't want it ending up in the dog with your balls

  • I personally the search feature is good with...

    no of threads:
    Bikes and bits -2049
    Mechs & fixing - 1181
    Rides & races - 465
    forum help - 111
    etc.

and a total of 9210 threads
    and 258396 posts

    BUT...
newbs just dont know what to search for... i agree we should and we have been pointing people in the right direction...with the classic response use the search feat. and a link. I think this is going to be inevitable. We should learn to hold our finger (tongues).

As i joined in October i've learnt a lot...
The older members have seen the community grow... and faced thousands of silly posts.

It is a community after all... we should be welcoming no matter what the question as murtle says
I for one am cutting down on flaming and anything i see a suspicious will be reporting.

    ...right last bit.

This forum is an amazing resource if you cant find the answer on here via a thread or a post its really not worth knowing. Being part of the community now i can PM my silly questions to the people i have met on here, ie know the man with the right answer for you and pick his brain.

    as said before...
    We all start somewhere.

  • Another thing is, if someone suggests "Try the search function", the best thing to do is also post a link to some useful search results!!

"Yeah I saw that post and sort of skimmed through it, but what I really want is some quality attention on me. I want to publicly receive all of your well thought out and oft-repeated opinions about tedious anal decision making over what colour to powdercoat my lockring, and I need to know exactly what you think will be the physiological outcome of choosing either a 16 or a 17 tooth sprocket based on your lifelong experiences. Then I'll just dismiss these insights, or selectively ignore them, and spout some insipid drivel about 'lovin' the fixie scene' and 50x14 being 'too spinny' and start a new thread asking where I can buy some spds or if anyone can just give me a set of NOS Cinelli drops."

  • well said ray

I am with BMMF on this one. If you recall, some one asked a question about bouncing in his saddle. BMMF put up a fantastic answer, including information about how to pedal correctly.

The cock totally ignored BMMF's post, and continued to dribble about frame angles.

  • i don't know quite what has gone wrong on this forum.
i am beginning to get fed up with the unnecessary flaming of new guys/girls.
how do they know how to use a *"search" *button???
they have come on here through google or recomended.
getting their bikes slagged off. fuck me it's a fucking cycle not a car.
they are just asking for help most of the time.
so what if they haven't been on a "*social" ride or drinks.
*they are more likely to, if they did recieve a warmer welcome.
a lot of riders out there, have been riding for years, and don't use this place.

also as tynan said yesterday, about new people coming on here, first posting and selling stuff, they are selling to a market we are providing.
if they offered something up i was after or wanted, i wouldn't give a fuck, i'd just buy it.
they also have searched and found us.

both these types of people, do not know the so called "*forum etiquette"*there is not FAQ.
alot of people on here, have asked some so called "*dumb" *questions, when they first came here. so what???

    it is getting boring.

and yeah, i'm as good as taking the piss as most. when necessary.

    and breath.....

    my first rant is over.

Rant? You call that a rant? Why don't you search the forum for some proper rants, and come back when you have worked up a decent one.

  • What do you want from me, Bill?

  • :p

  • yeah, well, if someone is a cock, there's nothing we can do about it. Best thing is to take new users as decent people (if their post isn't total cockspill), if they then reply in a dickish way or ignore something that you put effort into, then say what you f**king think to them!

  • What do you want from me, Bill?

    Some NOS Cinelli bars?

  • I believe that all of the long serving members of the community have been guily of flaming new members at some point in the past. I certainly have been.

To be honest, it does get rather trying answering the same questions so the flaming was a natural progression. That doens't mean to say that it was ever right.

Fuck, I abuse this forum with the best of them with off handed remarks and incessant pisstaking but to be honest the people worth flaming are ourselves. We, generally speaking, actually know each other and are if anything more offensive to each other in real life. It's fair to say that new members are what has made this forum great.

If it had closed it's membership when the forum hit say 500 users then no one would have been able to join after 14/08/07. The last registerable user would have been Matt (baddesigner). I for one think that would be a great shame as some of the people I know and love started using this forum a long time after that date. My life would infact be poorer for it. The point that I'm making is that we need new members as much as they need somewhere to sell their wares or ask stupid questions. For every cunt that joins the forum there must be at least 2 or 3 real users who are benefiting our corner of the interweb.

I like that this forum is locally based so many of us actually meet and know each other. I wonder how likely it would have been for myself to meet say Murtle or Ray without this place?

  • well said em, not the last bit, the first bit.

  • Oh, and the next person to post unwarranted abuse about random bike shops is going to get a proper flaming from me. Big style.

should have closed it at 499

forgot to mention that too bill, my thoughts exactly.

  • We, generally speaking, actually know each other and are if anything more offensive to each other in real life.

WTF are you talking about? Cock off, you total c***!

  • Actually, this forum has a lot to answer for. Not only have I had to tolerate dale's nonsensical witterings and scarlet's relentless pedantry, I have also had to put up with Other Em's horrific colour matching (green and pink? puhleeze!). And that's not even mentioning Shinscar.

Fuck it, YTF do I even come here?!?!

    Grrrrrrrrrrr.

  • yep im with bill on this one...

XXXXXXXX (copy and paste name in as you please) you cunt!

yeah but for people who are less social and they dont want to here about our weekday evening rants, new or otherwise... i think we should sometimes keep this private ie not for the forum.

But to completely contradict that..... if its fucking funny you gotta post!

    It's Scarlett - capital 'S', two 't's.

    Shitferbrains.

  • theres another forum that might be better suited for your needs Bill

  • WTF are you talking about? Cock off, you total c***!
    Bitch.

  • No exaggeration here, but I lurked here for 6 months before making my first post. In all honesty it took that long to think of something that I didn't think would be taken the wrong way or start a flaming war. I like the hardness of this place though - to use a bit of media-speak, it's more 'core', and it's good that there are relatively few threads on totally non-bike-related issues. I have been a member of other forums, such as Runner's World, where people seem to live - literally - on the forum. In the end I had to go because I couldn't stand all the crap threads about what they ate last night, or what happened in Eastenders yesterday.

As singlespeed and fixed grow in popularity though, more 'normal' (i.e. non-cyclists) people will join up, and as a result, you'll find that while they have an interest in ss/fixed, they're more interested in other stuff, hence a growth in crap threads and 'noob' C+ style questions. You will get people who don't know their nipples from their nipples and their bottom bracket from their bumhole, but hey, maybe they'll stick around and contribute something useful eventually.

I'm sat firmly on the fence over whether more people joining is a good thing or a bad thing, but one of the things someone might want to consider is developing a front page information resource that people can click through that answers most FAQs - there's a similar thing on http://www.southerndownhill.com/ that acts as an information resource that answers some key questions and prevents people from heading straight to the forums to post something inane.

  • We, generally speaking, actually know each other and are if anything more offensive to each other in real life.

This is true - it's much harder for you to punch people (me) in the face "virtually".

(and the other shit was well said).

WTF? That's for REAL messengers, not f*k*ng*rs like me.

  • ... Em's horrific colour matching ...

How could you? I for one would never slag off Em's clown bike. Again.
