• quick question.

i have some steel drop out plates on an aluminium frame, do i have to take these off to be powder coated?
i've undone the allen key bolts but it's a bugger to get off ..

Where did you get that done?
    Looks very nice!

  • Just got this back from Armourtex.

    RAL 5012 no clear coat = £49

The frame had some really heavy rust and pitting, so some of this has come thru - nothing could really be done about it tho.

Overall really happy, v quick and helpful.

    Just a couple of things...

    1) The RAL colour chart is big but often won't give you the exact colour you want. I was after a old school light/baby blue. RAL5024 was a bit too grey and the others were a bit dark.
    2) All this talk about powercoat being "thick" is more or less bollocks. There has been no loss in quality RE my lugs. Obviously its not as thin as the original enamel was, but it is not "thick".

  • from Current Projects:

i once wanted to outline the lugs of a frame too, but i didn't dare.
it's an old raleigh team professional powdercoated in RAL 1019:

the only thing i want to add to the frame are these decals:

the 'RALEIGH' on the downtube the 'TI' on the seattube and of course on the forkblades. that's all. any other suggestions?

  • Really pleased with this result......as hugo7 said, make sure you have a look at a few RAL colour charts if you're selecting a colour (especially if viewing on a pc monitor), as the ones I looked at vaired wildly.....this is RAL 5007

  • Apologies for not replying sooner.

    Zed,

You win a warm feeling and an imaginary gold star. If you are at the London Bikeathon on Sunday I will buy you all the beer you can drink. My number is 6013 and I am doing the challenge route from Ham House.

I got the paint from flippaint (see internet) and my son did it.

  • Nebulous,

My son did it and - as I am not a perfectionist - I am very happy with it. Armourtex appear to be good VFM and high quality. Perhaps they could source some pearlescent paints???

Don't go by ANYTHING on a computer monitor. Even a photo can vary hugely. The only reliable reference is actual paint/powdercoat swatches in front of your eyes, in daylight.

  • I found a place that stocks some of the flip paint colours as rattle cans for those without access to a spray booth, limited colours sadly but worth a look.

One litre of flippaint was 45 quid. It's enough for a couple of frames and forks just about. I had to go to my local garage to get the 2k thinners required. The electric paint spray gun was 15 quid on the internet.

Cannot find flippaint on paints 4u

  • Is it possible for Armourtex to paint a crank set?

Interms of whether the paint will apply and then bind to the metal, I dont know too much about metal.

  • will it be worth it?

I'm pretty sure that it is possible. I know that someone on here had their cranks done painted - not sure whether it was powdercoat and if it was done by Armourtex.

  • cranks were powdercoated white, been staying on fine

  • ^ I see its staying that side of the fence :)

  • will it be worth it?

Well I guess so, Id like it the same dark grey as the frame.

And a silver crank on an all black/grey bike, might look a little silly willy.
