Is the alias thing getting out of hand?

  • ^ This is why I'm no longer on the forum... Oh, hang on...

  • Dude...

  • I know...

  • I'm sure lots of people on here find aliases if not mildly diverting, if not sometimes downright funny. I don't. I find that the use of aliases on this forum, considering you start off with an alias anyway, to be becoming ridiculous, or moving onto just plain hostile and nasty.

The idea of creating several aliases on this forum is either based in some comedic thinking, or someone wishing to use their extra anonymity to possible launch attacks on other forum users. Its cowardly, and offensive. Watching someone use it in a thread today to abuse Van Uden, makes me realise that it is becoming the norm.....for some people.

Why is this even allowed? Its not always funny. Its major use is to anonymously attack someone, or to be hostile. Its shit at every level.

he may be an alias but he was mostly supportive of VanU.
    Ga2G? Who did you mean?

That is the point mate; if you point to a specific thread then you are making it personal; you are, if not pointing at the person, then at least waving in their general direction or rolling your eyes and nodding towards them. Gregorio was the person most on VanU's case in that thread - there, said it. Is he an alias? How do you know? If he is and you do what is so bad about saying so? Surely the innuendo is worse?

Just logged in after a glorious sporting weekend and chanced across this... which, if I'm correct, insinuates that I'm an alias and was abusing VanUden? I'm not really too established on the forum, granted, and my anticipation of shortly becoming a Londonite looks to have been scuppered, but I don't like some of the bullying that can occasionally be seen on here and feel uncomfortable with insinuations that that's what I was up to so just wanted to say:

I'm not an alias, and in the context of the VanU police thread I don't see it as being 'on his case'-yes, we were having an argument, re-reading it I may have been pretty direct but I certainly wasn't bullying. VanUden states in the thread be was being provocative, and I wasn't having a great day so rose to what I saw as a pretty generalised, sanctimonious statement where on other days I wouldn't... I;m pretty hard-nosed when it comes to 'an argument' VanUden stood his ground, we both made our points, various users supported or disagreed with each of us-he did at one point accuse me of being a troll and attacked my use of swear words, which again, wound me up and provoked me to let's say, live up to the comment, where in another instance I might have toned it down. I say to accuse me of being a troll isn't fair as from my perspective I was standing my ground, just as VanUden stood his, and I said that in my reply to him. Arguments that get that heated, I don't really enjoy, and to avoid repeating myself over and over or prolonging it, I was happy to walk away with a comedy Dale Winton banana pic... I've PM'd VanUden to make sure he knows nothing said was personal, and thats that, Velocio is welcome to confirm that I wasn't using an alias to support myself or attack him, and I certainly apologise if he or anyone else thinks I was being unduly offensive. That said, the forum can be pretty rowdy, strong language and insults are frequently used (I'm still recovering from being 'twunted' out of the blue by Crazy James, which, co-incidentally is now one of my favourite insults) which all adds to the colour of it, in my opinion.

On the general topic of aliases, I think that anyone that is using them to score points or abuse other users should be flagged. Fair enough if its for jokes, but like most things, common sense should win the day.

  • Ignore them Gregorio, it's just political correctness gone freakin' mad...

  • Hope so... If the day comes you can't post a Dale Winton-posing-with-a-huge-banana pic for comedic effect this forum will die.

  • ^ thanks andy, thats cheered me right up ;)

  • This could be the last time...

'Well I told you once and I told you twice'

    Just saying.....

  • Gregorio: I'd say you were "on his case" but by that I don't mean bullying; that's not what that phrase usually means is it? The point I was making was that Ashe pretty clearly identified you as the person he thought was an alias but didn't name you: and I don't like that. Either make a general point or name the person you are talking about/using as an example. It wasn't a comment on anything you said.

    Oh Joe....

Sorry, that was more directed at GA2G as like you say, he seemed to be referring to me and in quite strong terms. On his case... ok-I thought he'd said something stupid and was in a bad mood. Could have been more diplomatic or subtle.

If he thought I was being a cunt, alias or no, GA2G could and probably should have said so in the thread. VanU says himself he was being provocative, I rose to it, probably neither of us is in the right in either regard. I apparently have a 'potty mouth', like a lot of folks, and there's nothing like being told you're not allowed to do something to make you want to do it... Anyway, I avoid facebook etc like the plague and have only recently started participating in bike-related forums, a discussion like this just illustrates the general problematic nature of forums and not knowing who is saying what etc, and to be honest is pretty discouraging from participating in arguments/discussions whatever in the future.

  • You know what my name is, but I doubt anyone else, on facebook or otherwise, does.

    I'm just sayin.

    I do

  • Ignore them Gregorio, it's just political correctness gone freakin' mad...

Oh piss up a rope speccy :)

  • I'd like to remove my alias:
    maxcrowe
    I've ceased to need him.

  • Get to fuck, you little blighter x

  • Henry, stop posting under your alias.

  • True dat.

  • both banned

Now think about what you've done.

  • Are you running some kind of witness protection programme, Hippy?

  • Just for the record, and as the ever perceptive Mr Schick noted on the previous page, Gregorio is not an alias. After our locking of horns / waving of cocks the other day I PM'd Gregorio just to say look no harm done fella. He sent a very decent and polite reply back, basically saying the same and apologising if any offence had been taken, which it hadn't. So, all's well that ends well.

Don't let the debate around aliases put you off engaging in discussions in future though Gregorio, just roll with it dude. I think you'll fit in well here. You're stubborn, opinionated, short-tempered, and a potty-mouth :)

And if we're confessing to stuff I still feel guilty about calling Oliver a 'Dumbo' without adding in a smilie the other day when he told me off for using the 'R' word. Sorry Oliver, you're not a baby elephant that can fly :(

I also noted that on that thread a possibly pissed-up joeslain posted a reply telling Oliver sorry but I'd won as I was 100% (lots of spazzy [sorry Oliver] words) and therefore the winner. Joe then deleted this before I got a chance to quote him. Why Joe, why?

  • but like most things, common sense should win the day.

    hahahaha - repped
