  • The "Is the alias thing getting out of hand?" thread is getting out of hand.

  • for?
    is this an alias attack?

  • The recent alias bashing got out of hand. Sorry, mate.

  • you just want to see me naked...

    i know...

    No

  • Velocio knows very well all this, for me, alias or not (which i could not know anwyay), a bad post is ignored, passed over.
    What's the problem ?

Also, Will is correct, you are pointing the finger GA2G, by naming VanUden. It's not hard to back track his recent posts and see who your talking about. Fuzzy logic.

  • Dylan, you are mistakenly thinking that I didn't know exactly what I was doing with my post.

Give a bit of information, and the odds are that it shall all be figured out.
Give no information, and the chances are that no-one would make the correct links.

You think I gave some information in error? I didn't. I just was not prepared to go to war with anyone
over a principle that I feel will eventually mean more to others, than it could ever mean to me.

As for Velocio, I sometimes feel sad that he gave birth to this baby, not realising that he was only seeing the head,
and he had in fact became the instant father of quintuplets. I know that he knows what he's doing. Its a shame
though that he isn't given space to do much less. I'm sure we could all find better ways of filling our time, than to
play internet referee. I just feel that aliases make things worse in the end.

Its only my simply little opinion. It never needs to matter much to anyone.

  • I like the Tynnan/ Wheels thing, and around that time there where some other good alises... I honestly don't keep up with the day to day of the fourm enough to know whats up much any more but most of the people I still want to talk to are around so I'm happy.

still a good place to kill a few hours waiting for my lungs to get all better.

  • GA2G , I find your coment here tiresome "I'm sure we could all find better ways of filling our time, than to play internet referee."

After I posted in the Japanese cinema thread, you pm'ed me requesting that I delete the post and offered a suggestion where it would be better place, even though there had been previous posts about anime in that thread. So my post was not out of place. Anime is a part of Japanese cinema.

I do not want to make a big thing out of this, but maybe you can find something better to do with your time.

  • Why is this even allowed? Its not always funny. Its major use is to anonymously attack someone, or to be hostile. Its shit at every level.

Nice balanced and considered opinion there.

It's allowed because I believe in privacy and not having censorship. It's allowed because I think it's really important to allow people to express opinions without having this be associated to what I'll call their real identity. These may be views such as political preference, sexual orientation, etc. I believe that it is a fundamental principle of democratic societies that privacy is permitted and kept intact, and that means the ability to express political opinions without being judged by it or it being held against you. This manifests itself online within a forum that forces registration as providing a mechanism and service for people to register and voice those opinions without it being exposed who their alias is.

    So that's why it's allowed.

But I've shown in the past and enshrined in the rules that those who use aliases to just be jerks will discover that they cannot hide behind those aliases. Fundamentally no-one is anonymous on the internet and so I an of course figure out your real identity should I feel a need to (reported posts, incidents, etc). It's just that I won't do that for anything political, sexual, etc which is none of my business and part of my core beliefs.

I've also said that if I do ban someone, then they risk having all of their aliases deleted or merged into their primary account. So there is in fact a risk that should you have posted political stuff and find yourself being banned, should you then try and use your aliases to circumvent the ban I would merge them all and this would link your real identity to your political posts. So there is a edge case in there that has risk, but I doubt that it will happen to anyone (it hasn't to date).

Anyhow, alias are allowed for very good reasons and the ability to have aliases won't be removed. It's fundamental, it's considered and it will always be a capability of a site that I run.

  • trebor.

    You rang M'lud?

I 'aint no stinking alias but do feel free to attempt to figure out my real ID.

You are doomed to failure but it'll give you something to do innit.

  • [edit]I guessed right... apparently the challenge wasn't open to everyone though, just to those who might not work it out.[/edit]

    Busted!

Practice wot ye speach and all that...cough.

  • I appear to have hit the nail right on the head.

Shouldn't be so smug and challenge people to try and guess in future.

  • Guess who I am then...

Anyway, aliai can be good to ask a question, but to attack/pester others maybe not as good?

Oh come, yours is all over the internet. You're admin of a facebook group FFS, and facebook uses real identities.

Anyone who is a member of facebook just shouldn't ask people to try and guess their ID. They effectively do not have privacy in the first place, it's only a matter of time and we're not talking a lot of time either.

  • ... and facebook uses real identities.

You know what my name is, but I doubt anyone else, on facebook or otherwise, does.

    I'm just sayin.

    is it Ruth?
    Sally?
    Jocasta?
    Chardonnay?

  • Well, it isn't Nhatt Attack, believe it or not.

Hence not using my real name, using the name most people know me as, sort of real alias.

  • <---- Anonynimity built in.

    Thanks mum!

  • Well, it isn't Nhatt Attack, believe it or not.

You remind me of a clementine I used to know.

    Destiny?
    Britney?

    I forgot already.

Forgetfulness is a really important thing I think.

It would be good if the web developed a degree of memory loss.

  • Nice balanced and considered opinion there.....

A mildly sarcastic response, which made me re-examine my thinking. Having done that, I realise that I don't participate in enough of this forum to actually have a broad view. Ipso facto, my view is based on incidents I see, and since I don't participate across all the fora(Platini please advise, I'm hoofing it on that one), my view is indeed narrow.

I should not have created such a broad brush stroke from such a narrow perspective. Others would know far better than I if aliases are good or bad.

I am wholeheartedly in favour of sarcasm, and my response to it illustrates why.
