  • Hi,
i'm looking for a wheelset, for an intended fixed build project i'm thinking about embarking on, my ideal would be:

    • for fixed gear bike
    • preferably under 1kg each if that's possible?
    • front machined for brake
    • wide flange hubs with cutout
    • deep rims
    • black

like i say that's my ideal, not sure that's all possible but any links to anything approaching that or some suggestions for what sort of wheelset might suit my criteria much appreciated.
    thanks

  • why do you need deep rims? a pair of open pros's would be lighter, just as strong (if not stronger) and give a more comfortable ride.
or are you counting on the extra time gained time trialling when using aero wheels?

  • mavic ellipse, 1996g a pair

  • If you want under 1kg then easily possible but not when using deep rims. And as the rim weight is the thing that matters then agree than Open Pro would be a better choice. Unless you go for some carbon deep rims but you haven't said how many $'s you want to spend!

  • Tyres & tubes make a fair bit of difference on the feel of the rotational mass, they may not be the heaviest thing ever, but as they are on the outermost edge of the wheel I guess it makes it more significant.

I agree with the others though, wanting deep rims and your wheels to be especially light is a contradiction.

Mavic Ellipse is a proper track wheelset so probably not the best for the street.

There are other things you can do, entry level track hubs are very heavy ive found, getting lighter hubs with hollow axle, butted spokes 32 rear, 28 front should be a good setup.

Alloy nipples too, they last well as long as the build wheel is built efficently.

  • mavic ellipse are very very stiff. a really nice wheelset but not one i would like to ride on the road.
but i gather it's all about looks and ride quality just isn't an issue with fixed (road) riders in these modern times.

  • oh, well, i suppose i don't NEED deep rims. I just thought they looked nice. But i guess if they are generally heavier, i'd rather have lightness over deep rims.

  • needs braking surface on front aswell.

    Fit the criteria perfectly

for fixed gear bike - Tick
    preferably under 1kg each if that's possible? - 950g front, 1050g rear
front machined for brake - tick
wide flange hubs with cutout - tick
    deep rims - tick
    black - tick

    Let me know

  • i do hear tell that there are these places called bike shops in london's famous london, and i believe that they might help you.

  • Look Bristol Boy, stop taunting us with this talk of shoppes that actually sell bike-related goods.
    We should be so lucky!

  • We should be so lucky!

will you aussies stop banging on and on about Kylie? for the love of God!

  • I'd like to bang on Kylie..

  • you should be so lucky, doing the locomotion.

  • thought that I would share with everybody interested, bikehubstore offers rotaz hubs which paired together give you a <200g sealed hubset consisting of road front and mtb front which can be adapted to rear with tomicogs or velosolo.
of course the conversion kit weighs some too, but with 130g for a rear hub 200g in total is easily achievable I think.
decent price too, as you can have the set of 20h front and 28rear for less than 100$

combine it with some nice budget kinlins or stans, and there, a fairly sturdy* wheelset for not too much.

    for everybody < 85kg

  • There are these on eBay too. They're nice and fairly cheap!

    American Classicz

  • rear AC hub weighs more than a set of rotaz jake

  • I didn't say they were lighter. I just said they were nice and fairly cheap.

    ...24 x 3 cross Rear...

...The rims are Stans Alpha rims...

    Definitely would not want!

Maybe for girls/children, but surely they'd collapse under any weight?

thats nice, I like your enthusiasm.

That is why I removed an offer on them haha. A bit too flimsy for 80KG!
