i think success hungry is more like it. if you want fame fuck a premiership footballer.

it's an interesting article but it seems to be portraying all the medallists as fame/money hungry, which I'm not sure they were/are.

i agree that they're not fame hungry, but i think they are money hungry, and why shouldn't they be? To any sportsman who is not a footballer/ tennis player, it must be the bitterest pill to swallow after reaching the peak of your chosen sport and finding that you still have an overdraft, when even 2nd rate footballers have 6 figure incomes.
Wiggins signing to Cofidis for a poxy 45k after his first Olympic gold springs to mind.

wow she's cheap ;-)
ha, yeah. cant believe she did that just for fun. strikes as too naive to be true.
seriously though, they arent doing too badly now are they?compared to other sports the £ must be considerably less so can see their beef, but they get to live their lifestyle, race, best kit, travel, and then after a few years real world time.not too awful is it.
Ive met lots of people at the top of their game and they are *never *happy, rather be an anonymous mofo posting on a forum meself.

money can buy you nice things but never happiness really

Even with the low income they earn, they still managed to stick to what they love doing (cycling), that's alone is enough to give them top respect, especially compared to footballer who merely have to work on their move and testicle-kicking skill.

No no, I meant cycling alone isnt enough to make her happy, she obviously wants more, which most people do in life. Not her background, family etc.
Though Im not too sure her whinging to the press was a good move?

I feel rather sad about this (especially the gold medallist who's now building the velodrome for 2012), and also kind of outraged on their behalf, as I am on behalf of the women I know who play / have played on the England football and rugby teams, and never made enough money out of it to give up their day jobs. Ridiculous when you think how much male footballers are paid.
But surely the Olympics has always been like this? There were all those people back in 1948 who took a few days off from their normal jobs for the games - and there's the chap my father swims with every morning, who competed in the Olympics (possibly even in 1948), and is now content with striking fear into the hearts of fellow pool-users in Mid Wales.
I really am in two minds about this. I'm pretty sure that if I'd won a gold medal I'd be similarly indignant about the lack of attention. But then again, when has an Olympic gold ever been a guarantee of lifetime success? It works for some, but not for everyone. And isn't being able to hold onto a bit of your life and obscurity something of a blessing?

People arn't active they live in the caccooned world of their Cars and Couch TV world. They watch olympics for a bit of excitement and some national pride. They can't possibly relate to the hard toil to get to be a medal winner, when there own experience is a drive in Macdonalds.....Etc..

I would argue that if you are doing sports for the fame only then you're probably doing it for the wrong reason. Cycling isn't football and they knew that.
That said I, I think I would be mad if I won a gold medal and could see another gold medallist in the same sport getting Cornflakes sponsorship deals and I didn't.

There was a piece on/involving her in the Guardian today. I have to admit, she does come across as a bit of a moaner. When she's not complaining about her lack of fame, she's whinging about pressure from coaches to "get her hair cut and make herself less feminine". I'm not saying these aren't valid complaints (well, actually, HTFU my response to the latter would be), but voicing them publicly perhaps isn't the best idea, especially for someone who's apparently so image-conscious.

The piece above about the Olympic medalists lack of fame doesn't strike me as her moaning.. The article was set out to convey what it did and thus I can't imagine they were asked about much else. As for voicing this stuff publicly, she's answering questions from a reporter in an interview, not shouting it unprompted on twitter or some other website..

Don't be mean :(
Oh dear. Haha. Sounds like she's fame hungry..
